436715 2006-04-10 23:33:00 with all the various kinds of writers, media and pc setups, its really hard to actually compare media. i have a friend , he has a new liteon 16x dvd writer, latest firmware, faster cpu(his is athlon 3000 not sempron, mine's amd xp2500, nearly 2 years old) , more ram (he has 1 gig of ddr 400 , mine has 512megs ddr400) , has the same burning apps as me, but for some reason, alll of the appns show imation media as 4x max!! Grrr!!

The quality of the burn is dependent on the drive & the media - usually has nothing to do with the PC specs. Some combinations of drive & media work well, others give you lots of coasters.
Basically the firmware of the drive determines how fast each type of media is burnt. You can also get some hacked firmware that allows faster burning e.g. on my NEC drive i can burn 8x Taiyo Yudens (some of the best quality media) at 16x :)
But with cheap media (CMC, Princo, no-name\whatever), it's not recommended.

ive been a big fan of the dvd+r format for the last few months, but after having excellent results with the warehouse bought 16x tdk dvd-r's im now buying those. 10 discs for 15.00 i think.. i tried these noname 8x dvd+r's from trademe, apparently they had sony media ID's . $30 for 50 discs . these struggled @ 8x in any program. so gave them the flick

I've had no problems with the 8x TDK's from a year or so back. The burnt discs have lasted quite well for cheapies.

What about these .

. blankcd . co . nz/dvd%2Brmedia-excel . htm" target="_blank">www . blankcd . co . nz

Says they are Taiyo Yuden blanks and if so they seem to be a good price . Are they the same as these

. trademe . co . nz/Computers/Blank-discs/DVD/auction-55251695 . htm" target="_blank">www . trademe . co . nz

Seem to be the same media code .

I am looking for another 100 or so . If they are really Taiyo Yuden why are they so much cheaper than

So many questions!!!

436717 2006-05-04 20:58:00 Yes it's a worry Tukapa !!Those Excel +R's are a great price if they're the true item. Almost tempts me to get a small pack to try.The trademe is way over!!
Just picked up 5 packs of 50 ea from Noel Leeming of Sony--(Taiyo Yuden TG001162)
[DVD+R:YUDEN000-T02-000] at $58 ea.They don't like being burnt at 4x, but have at last worked out how to upgrade the 710a's firmware and done it, so now have to do another test run!But these are the only TY's I've seen in the shops anywhere since I started on this path.
BTW, thanks for the blankcd link.

436718 2006-05-04 21:38:00 There is free software to identify who made your blanks - DVD Identifier (http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/)

Hi autechre
I have just tried the program you recommend on some DVD+R discs that I am using - "NC International" brand
but consistently get the response when it has finished examining the discs

Manufacturer name : Manufacturer not found in the database
Manufacturer ID : Not found on the disc
Media Type ID : 001
Product Revision : not specified
Blank disc capacity : 4.7 GB
Recording speeds : 1X-2.4X, 4X

That the Manufacturer ID is not found on the disc is a worry ! I use these for copying my data using Nero (for my backups).

436719 2006-05-04 21:46:00 Hi Neil

Glad I could be of help with the link!!

The plot thickens. See this link (and read the Q&A's at the bottom)

www.trademe.co.nz

This seller is the same guy that runs the blankcd website.

Still keen to try these discs now? It does appear that the Excel +R's on the blankcd website have the same media code as those you bought from Noel Leeming though.

I am really after +R's cos my writer has automatic bitsetting changing the booktype from +R to ROM (doesn't work with -R discs). The only genuine Taiyo Yuden blanks I can find are -R.

Never mind - I will keep looking. Maybe I will give some Verbatim a go - they seem to get a good write-up. I have been using Imation but on doing a disc info check I see they are CMC media. Haven't had any problems with them though.

Cheers.

436720 2006-05-04 22:20:00 If even scungy manufacturers like CMC put their name to the discs they produce, what does that say about the anonymous manufacturers?

I'd be in a hurry to transfer my backups to a more trustworthy/reliable media if I were in your shoes Misty.

They might last well, but then again, they might not.

Cheers

436721 2006-05-04 22:38:00 Well a friend bought a 50 pack of Imation (if im wrong ill change it) and of the 15 he has used, he has made 14 coasters . . . . . . . . . . . . . . he is so ticked . . .
He also Got some TDK? to replace them and they work just fine, and he regular use's DSE . . . . DVD's even tho i give him a hard time about shopping there . . . :D

and ive had dodgy Imation before as well . . . . . . . . . . . . . so id say with anything, any product , brand etc, theres good and bad . . . .

Id say if youve used a brand before and they work, stick with them . . . .

436722 2006-05-05 01:08:00 Misty,
I'd recommend you ditch those no-name brand discs & get some decent ones such as Sony, Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Excel, TDK.
They'll be more expensive, but your backup should still be readable after a few months :)

As for that DVD Identifier program, there is a ad-ware alternative, DVD Info Pro (http://www.dvdinfopro.com/), but you have to pay to remove the ads.

436723 2006-05-05 01:21:00 The Excel media are apparently manufactured by Taiyo Yuden.

Here's a few other interesting links about TY media & fakes:

Based on the info supplied in your post, I sincerely doubt that they are TY at all, and if TY make Excel media then these are probably fake Excel as well.

If they lack manufacturer's ID's they are fakes for sure, so just take a look and see what they say, then refer to the TY data in Autechre's links and make your mind up.

Cheers
