436705 2006-03-11 12:18:00 You sure can, and that doesn't take into account the fakes with spoofed Media ID as well.

To see the background to brands/manufacturers, click on the link in my first post in this thread. There are two separate sections with that information so scroll down from the first one to get to the "Branding Guide" as well. You will see that third-rate manufacture Princo make fake TDK DVDs as well :( and you can bet that the Media ID has been fakes as well so you have to judge by results whether you are buying the real deal or Princo junk. The real problem is that the fakes might well burn perfectly, but the data might not last and only time will tell.

To find the media ID I use the free version of DVDinfoPro but there are several free programs around including DVD Identifier and Infotool303. Let Google be your friend and search for: dvd +"media id" +download There is also a link in an earlier post in this thread

And finally, I downloaded DVD Identifier and checked both the '4 times Warehouse' and '16 times Noel leemings' discs. They are both "TTH02", which according to DigitalFAQ.com means that they are made by TDK.

436706 2006-03-13 03:49:00 I have used Princo's in the past (200+) and found them in the main to be reliable and very good value :) . I prefer Ritek when i can source them as i believe they are even better quality .

As to the data loss remark and longevity concerns how often have you actually been effected by this and was it obvious as a result of the DVD layer bubbling (DVD rot) or did the disc surface look perfect but you had errors on reading data . Was this also verified by a disc scan from say nero?

436707 2006-03-16 09:39:00 I've just used the media identifier program to check what my disks are.

The CyQ'Ve disks that came with my DVD burner when I purchased it as a bundle are made by CMC and are listed as either bottom of the heap or 1st step up.
The Sony inkjet printables I bought a 100 cake of recently for $45 are SONY and are in the top of the class pile.

I see that warehouse stationary have a special in the latest mailer with Imation DVD's 50+5 cake for $39.99

I have been using two types of media to burn the edited footage from the DVD recorder onto and will be keeping a copy off site as well. In light of the poor review on the CMC media I might get a cake of Imations to safeguard any disk disasters hopefully. To be honest though I haven't had a bad burn with the CMC media though.

436709 2006-04-08 09:42:00 Any updates on this lot?

I have been trying to purchase some DVD -R's in the last week or so and looking for a 50 or 100 cake of inkjet printables. E-0ne who sold me my last lot of Sonys haven't got any more. They did sell me a cake last weekend that they said was Sony but it was quickly identified as CMC and returned and a refund requested even quicker.

Whose been buying what and where lately and what prices have you paid?
I suppose for the work I have been putting into what I have been editing up it's worth keeping so I'd like to find some more decent disks at a decent price, let me know what's in your local shop.

436710 2006-04-08 12:34:00 ive burnt many dvds . both +r and -r, cheapo to name brands . i have an asus 1608p 16x dvd writer . ive used cmc brand dvd-r's and +r's from 8x thru to 12x burn and had pretty good results . most of the time if ive had the odd coaster, it tends to be more my doing rather than the writer or media (eg watching a dvd, downloading a file and burning a dvd all at the same time) and most of the time its fine (no lies!) .

what i noticed is, in nero and using an imation dvd+r rated at 12x from warehouse stationery . it fails at 12x .
at 8x burn, the writer sounds like a V8 in first gear trying to get to 100kph . result is a usual fail . i have to burn at 6x to guarantee success .

same media in another dvd-video burning program like dvd shrink or clonedvd . burns sweeeet at 8x and 12x, none of the whining drive noises . .

going by this, appears its nero the cause? hmmm .

bought some tdk dvd-r's 16x speed rated from the good ol warehouse . nice looking media . burns 8x and 12x easily in nero , the drive hums along nicely and doesnt sound like its protesting .

ok . . after this and making the comparison, its not nero . . its the media? but the imations were fine in anything other than nero! the tdk's were fine in everything including nero .

i guess my take on the dvd media quality issue would be, its a combination of the burning app, the media and pc settings . i generally buy tdk's and imations
to ensure the media is not going to be a factor . . then after that im thinking its now down to writer and the burning app and how they read the media .

with all the various kinds of writers, media and pc setups, its really hard to actually compare media . i have a friend , he has a new liteon 16x dvd writer, latest firmware, faster cpu(his is athlon 3000 not sempron, mine's amd xp2500, nearly 2 years old) , more ram (he has 1 gig of ddr 400 , mine has 512megs ddr400) , has the same burning apps as me, but for some reason, alll of the appns show imation media as 4x max!! Grrr!!

ive been a big fan of the dvd+r format for the last few months, but after having excellent results with the warehouse bought 16x tdk dvd-r's im now buying those . 10 discs for 15 . 00 i think . . i tried these noname 8x dvd+r's from trademe, apparently they had sony media ID's . $30 for 50 discs . these struggled @ 8x in any program . so gave them the flick

hope this helps not hinders lol

436711 2006-04-08 22:15:00 I have ordered another pack (50) of Sony DVD+R's from my local Sony dealer for $50.00. Been waiting 3 weeks now! Neil McC (178)
436712 2006-04-09 02:57:00 ive burnt many dvds . both +r and -r, cheapo to name brands . i have an asus 1608p 16x dvd writer . ive used cmc brand dvd-r's and +r's from 8x thru to 12x burn and had pretty good results . most of the time if ive had the odd coaster, it tends to be more my doing rather than the writer or media (eg watching a dvd, downloading a file and burning a dvd all at the same time) and most of the time its fine (no lies!) .

I think that the big issue with cheap media is the durability of the data . We can expect that most media will burn OK regardless of source, though speeds might vary and the odd coaster may appear, but the big question is "will my data still be there in X years when I want or need it?" .

Artificial aging tests suggest that CMC and their ilk may fall short of expectations, and in that vein I have some comedy CDs burned to CMC media that are starting to lose tracks at the end of the burn, i . e . at the outer edge of the disc .

I wasn't aware of this when I first posted in this thread, but I took the discs with me on a long road trip and was disappointed to find that they had started to rot . I checked them on two other players and the problem was the same, which rules out playback problems . This effect has shown up very quickly i . e . within 3 years of burning .

436713 2006-04-09 05:57:00 How have you had the disks stored Billy?
Any exposure to heat or moisture at all?

I guess that's why i'm burning two or three copies of the files I really want to keep. :(

No, kept in CD cases in my office, no moisture and nothing abnormal in terms of temperature or humidity. Further research suggests the problem may be caused by unequal/uneven dye distribution when it was spun out during manufacture.
