436900 2006-03-09 05:11:00 Installation of a USB flash drive failed and Win ME does not recognise the flash drive . I want to uninstall the drivers and attempt a fresh install . The flash drive works OK on another Win ME machine after correctly installing USBSTOR . INF in C:\windows\inf and running install and rebooting prior to connecting the USB drive . This procedure failed on the problem machine (my sisters) as I think incorrect/faulty drivers may have been installed . :( :badpc:

Can I remove/uninstall all the USB controllers in Device Manager when running in safe mode? I believe the controllers will be reinstalled automatically when windows reboots and then I can install the flash drive properly . Will this work to remove the corrupt install or am I missing something?

Your suggestions would be most appreciated . :help:

Thanks

Allan

436901 2006-03-09 05:39:00 Does the driver you have, have a inf file?

If so, go to the entry in device manager, and go into its properties . And go to update driver . And point it to the inf file, so it loads (hopefully), the right driver .

You should be able to delete it in normal windows, or safe mode . The only prob is, it may reload / reinstall the USB entry, but it may also reload the driver that isnt working .

436902 2006-03-09 06:08:00 Hi Speedy thanks for the reply,

The file USBSTOR . INF when placed in C:\windows\inf will install the correct USB flash drive drivers when you right click on it and select install . Then after rebooting and then connecting the flash drive windows completes the install and the flash drive appears as a new drive in "my computer" and also in "device manager" . I know this procedure works as I did it on my own Win ME machine after my sister ran into trouble installing the flash drive . This proves that the flash drive isn't faulty . (note; if USBSTOR . INF does not exist in C:\windows\inf, it can be extracted from C:\windows\options\install\precopy1 . cab)

Unfortunately because the install on my sisters machine was done incorrectly (the machine asked for the Win ME disk but I don't know what files were installed if any, the supplier told us to download a Win 98 driver setup file from their web site but that didn't work either) . Because the drive is not recognised by the machine it does not appear in the device driver, so I can't see what drivers are loaded . (I've checked on my own machine and it only appears in device driver when the drive is plugged into the USB) .

Unfortunately there is no windows restore point avail prior to the bad install so the only thing I can think of is to uninstall the USB controllers and start again, but I'm unsure if this is the right way to go or if it will just make matters worse . I've done a lot of searching on the web and on Microsoft support but can't find a suitable fix .
