436685 2006-03-08 08:02:00 I'm looking at purchasing a spindle of 50 Blank DVD-Rs, but I am not a expert in which brand is better etc, i've only purchased one set before and it was only 5 dvd-rs (transonic brand at warehouse) and they've done a really good job, but i'm more wary now of prices etc,

I've found this really good price at supercheap computers website...but am not sure about brand.. Spindle of 50 Blank DVD-Rs (supercheappc.biz)

I dont really want to spend more than $30 on purchase.

Why I want these.....most of them will be used for home made videos as I've got a friends computer set up here so I can copy a few videos of ours from holidays/birthdays etc to dvd-r...so it'd have to accept good quality and video :), if they're not used for that, they'd just have data thrown on them to ensure space on my computer :)

I look forward to your recommendations :)

436690 2006-03-08 08:33:00 I've had good experiences with Princo branded DVD-Rs. Avoid the DSE branded ones like the plague - they are highly unreliable, and do not even meet the rated speeds.

A friend of mine has gone through fairly close to 500 of the Princo disks in the past 2 years or so, with only 1 or 2 which have caused problems.

436691 2006-03-08 09:50:00 According to this site ( . digitalfaq . com/media/dvdmedia . htm" target="_blank">www . digitalfaq . com) they are not Sony DVDs at all, they are fakes . Apparently CMC are well known makers of crap CDs & DVDs, I have a 50 spindle of CDRs that I bought from the Office Depot in the US and although they don't seem to burn coasters, some have holes in the internal layer or pieces of plastic welded to the face (I tossed those ones) . On checking I found that they were made by CMC .

I just bought 100 Fuji DVD-R from DSE for 87 cents each (just under 75 cents ex gst) on their $9 for a 10-pack special . They are made by Prodisk which rate as a second tier manufacturer . I have a trade card so I got a volume discount but the 90 cents each price was available to anybody . Unfortunately that deal ended Sunday night but it is bound to return as that was its second time around in a couple of months .

You will soon forget the cheap prices if you burn coasters or the data doesn't last . It may cost more, but buy quality .

Cheers

436692 2006-03-08 12:07:00 I don't waste my time or money on anything except Imation disks. So far I have had no issues with either their DVD disks or the CD media.

I wouldn't trust anything that the Red Shed sells, or any unknown "Kamakooza" brand sold by other budget brand outlets.

It's just not worth the pain of losing your data at some unknown point, simply for the sake of saving a few cents on the cost of the disks.

436693 2006-03-08 15:05:00 On the basis of what I'd already learned about brands from posts here, this afternoon I bought a pack of 10 Imation DVD-Rs from Warehouse Stationery for $19.99.
(Not a Special - just normal price, so it may well be cheaper elsewhere?)

It is a Combo pack, containing 7 DVD-R recordable plus 3 DVD-RW rewriteable, according to its info & the salesperson..
I'm assuming this gives me chances to experiment
as a DVD-burning novice.
Presumably I make my first mistakes with the re-writables, giving me the chance to record over those errors?
Then when I've got it sussed, I use the one-offs for permanent storage?

Anyway, Chris, as this thread already had 2 votes for Imation brand, if you want to forget about that no-brand spindle, Warehouse Stationery has an Imation spindle of 55 DVD- or +R for $39.95 if you can go the extra $10.

436694 2006-03-08 19:00:00 Have been using Imation CDr's for ages now. Not anymore as after testing with Nero drive a lot show up faulty.Have swapped to Verbatim. Had a good run with Imation DVD+-R's,but after reading up on them as Billy has pointed out, they too are made by CMC and regarded as not good by the forums I've visited. So have been using Sony and Verbatim again, but they are hard to find and dearer.I think the main problem with the CMC's and cheaper ones of the world is the long term storage.
