436518 2006-03-07 22:34:00 Getting a monitor as well? Make sure it is 19" min with a neat pc like that. DDR2 Ram with an Athlong?

Maybe wait for a 7900 GT ?

436519 2006-03-07 23:02:00 U wont be able to use DDR2 with that socket 939 athlon 4000+
Wow, like the sound card and video card, will need a native 1280x1024 LCD panel or better to appreciate the graphic's card.

Personally though, if I was buying now, I would get dual core 3800+ instead of the single core 4000+...

436520 2006-03-08 00:23:00 I went for the 4800+ / 7800 GT with water cooling and lots of bells and whistles. It replaced a 3.2GHz socket 478 PC with 6800 GT.

I have no ball and chains, AKA wife and kids. My primary motivator was a curiousity how could I build a powerful, but whisper quiet PC. Cost wasn't really a factor.

All told I think I spent about $3,600 excluding monitor. Is it 3x better in any way than a $1,200 PC. Not a chance. Is it even twice as good? Nope.

Having said all that, I agree with SolMiester. The 3800+ currently gives a good bang for the buck.

Don't think i915 chipset can get along well with AMD CPU :)

436522 2006-03-08 00:41:00 Think I'd go for two hard drives instead of the one ginormous one. Greg (193)
436523 2006-03-08 00:45:00 Think I'd go for two hard drives instead of the one ginormous one.I'd second that. I have my OS on one and my games and data on the other. KiwiTT_NZ (233)
436524 2006-03-08 00:58:00 Excellent. Can't see anything wrong with it. Enjoy! pctek (84)
436525 2006-03-09 04:18:00 or is the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ (Socket 939) better? WestMclaren2004 (7303)
436526 2006-03-09 04:21:00 AMD 4400+ or 4800+ X2 on an Asus A8N derived board (bliss :D but higher end) Myth (110)
