437603 2006-03-12 08:56:00 I just had to do some work on a system of a friend of a friend of...... (you know the kind of thing)

windows XP SP1 on a dell

the teenage sun tried to install a new version of norton anitvirus and something went very wrong.

system boot like normal.
desktop look normal

no documents can open, they have no program associated with it.
"my computer" cant see any thin on any hard drive.
if you right click on any hard drive to get properties windows offer to format it.
computer wont boot in to safe mode.
if you click start, run and type cmd to get to a command line you get the "no program associated" error
you cant run any .exe (no program associated error)

after much doing a repair with no luick i re-install windows.

all of the my documents are still there but they had three user accounts and some of the my documents for two users cant be accessed, i think it is due to the fact they had a password on the accounts.....

the real question is how can we get into the "my documents" for the two users??

the other question is has anyone seen a system so stuffed up??

You can correct the lose of file associations by downloading a registry repair file for those keys, but I guess you are past that point now.

Easy, slave it to a good computer, this will let you take ownership (support.microsoft.com) of the files you need for backup. Then format and reinstall.

the other question is has anyone seen a system so stuffed up??Yes its a common teenage boy problem.

437606 2006-03-12 12:39:00 Mine broke today as well. I was playing F.E.A.R when it crashed and burned on me. Had to power off to get it to reboot at all. Then it went through a ChkDsk on G and then C. G was my game partition. When doing C it was going fine until it suddenly said something about an error on C and it could not finish the Chkdsk. It then proceeded to reboot fine so I went back to playing F.E.A.R and then shortly after it crashed again but this time would not boot at all. Kept coming up with NTDLL.DLL error. Tried recovery console on it and C drive could not even get a DIR to run on it. Checked the partiton info and it said unknown as well as G being unknown. The rest were okay so decided to format and start from fresh (needed a fresh install anyway).

Drive formatted but hung at the end at 100%. Windows install tried 6 times with varying degrees of failure.

Now it will not even POST properly and complains about the overclocking (it is an ASUS P5 with auto overclocking).

I suspect either power supply or a memory problem but ran out of time before I had to go to work. Will try pulling out one of the sticks of RAM (DDR2) today and see how that works. Tried to lock the overclocking down but that did not seem to work either.

If all else fails I will have to hook the drives to my other PC and pull the data I want off it and start from scratch.

this was the first thing i thought of but when i downloaded a "reg-cleaner" i couldent run it due to the fact the .exe did not have associations with anything.

437609 2006-03-12 23:31:00 If it were me, I try to get the files off the system, per Rob99 suggestion, then attempt to repair it.

May go from bad to worse.

Important lesson: backup critical files *before* letting a teenager loose on your home PC.
