437310 2006-03-12 07:13:00 I hope you guys live awfully close to the exchange, i have a feeling ADSL is distance-limited even more than the original.I'm pretty sure I'm about 200m from my local exchange (I presume it is the white box sticking out of the ground that Telecom vans are parked next to every so often?).

It's great that Telecom is going to be upgrading their network, but unless they boost data caps it will be pretty much worthless (I've recently been wondering, if international data costs are so expensive, why they don't have separate national and international data caps? ).

The exchange is a fairly large building, not a box sticking out of the ground. They are often, but not always, located next to Post Offices.

Telecom (or should I say, Alcatel) will not be rolling out adsl2 (en.wikipedia.org), they'll be rolling out adsl2+ (en.wikipedia.org)

And it wont be available from mid year, it will start being rolled out from mid year onwards. You can expect to see product about christmas time.

“The NGB capability will be deployed from June 2006 and you can expect to see some of the new services by Christmas this year,” - Matt Crockett, GM Telecom Wired

adsl2+ gives an average range of 1.5km, so unless you're within 1.5km from an exchange, or in a Fibre To The Curb area, you'll probably have to keep on waiting.

For me on a 3mbit up/down flatrate wireless connection, I really dont care enough to get excited about this. So for me I dont care about when, I care more about: will upload be crippled? Will it have retardedly low caps? will it differentiate between nat/int traffic?

Exchanges are typically big empty looking brick buildings in a 50's/60's architectural design. They used to be huge to cater for all the operators doing manual line connections, nowadays they're essentially empty - a rack cabinet or two and the local loop room. I'll see if I'm allowed to get some pictures. Though in saying that, the smaller white cabinets are normally small exchanges per se, but not all of them have dslams and such.

It depends on the size, if it's a small cabinet, that's like the exchange for a block or two and not likely to have the equipment until FTTC, if it's more like garden shed size, that's like the exchange for a small township - think beach township size, and might have the equipment.
