1399349 2015-04-26 02:05:00 I am getting a AMD FX-8320E CPU to go on Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P motherboard.

Do I need to buy a aftermarket cooler/heat sink or will the stock cooler that comes with the CPU be good enough ?
Does using stock cooler shorten CPU life just cause of the constant higher CPU temp?

I wont be doing any serious over clocking.
It will be used for some gaming but no serious SLI stuff.

Thanks

1399350 2015-04-26 03:19:00 Stock coolers are fine, I've been using them for years with no issues. Aftermarket coolers are only required for overclocking or cases with poor airflow. The manufacturers don't just randomly pick the cheapest, they also make sure it's adequate for normal use.

The hottest my CPU's ever get is when I stress test them after building a new PC, they never get that hot again under normal use.

1399351 2015-04-26 03:46:00 Yup I've always used the stock coolers on the PC's I build. Never had any probs.

But if you do buy something, you have to be careful how you install it. And how big it is. Some are huge and can affect things neat the socket on the mobo. And short something.

1399352 2015-04-26 06:10:00 ok thanks guys. I will go with the stock cooler in that case learning (5137)
1399353 2015-04-26 06:22:00 watercooling is not overrated on the low end, especially if you can mount it on your case (even if you need to mod your case) Mirddes (10)
1399354 2015-04-26 07:38:00 Never been a fan of putting water in my sensitive electronics and its really not necessary with modern cooling. It just wouldn't be awesome for me just plain daft. gary67 (56)
1399355 2015-04-26 07:58:00 watercooling = less fans = quieter

low end means many things.
most of the time the stock cooler is ideal.

1399356 2015-04-26 08:50:00 You realise you still need fans to cool the radiator(s) right? icow (15313)
1399357 2015-04-26 17:41:00 yeah, thats a radiator fan replacing a case fan and a cpu fan. Mirddes (10)
