1399312 2015-04-25 07:01:00 One of my geriatric XP computers has decided to just lock up on a more and more regular occasions.

Neither the mouse and keyboard function when this happens so the only way out is the Reset button or the Power Button.

I must have had a dozen or so crash closures so I figured it might be time to chkdsk /r and try and sort some of the mess there must be. I managed this by starting in safe mode and setting chkdsk for next start.

All good except chkdsk has got to stage 4 of 5 and has been sitting on 4% for the last hour with the HDD light on all the time.

Can’t say I’ve struck this before so thought I’d open it up for discussion.

1399313 2015-04-25 07:16:00 Walk away slowly --OK run :p

Seriously -- Leave it, if its "stuck" on something it is often "working" on what ever it is. It will eventually move on, may take a few more minutes may take several hours. ( even over night)

Bad sectors on the Drive can cause that. If you Crash the PC to stop it, the drive will more than likely be marked as Dirty, and chkdsk will run again.

You would then have to go in and give it the commands to cancel, chkntfs /x c: (assuming C is the HDD letter) thats if it starts at all, crashing chkdsk you can do all sorts of damage to the OS and make it unbootable.

1399314 2015-04-25 08:17:00 Right again Wainui.

Had my tea, watched the news, another hour passed, and we're at 12%.

Looks like an overnighter, but can I get a log of what it has done?

I'm picking it may be fixing the damage from the number of most undignified closures, but I'm also picking the original problem is still to be addressed. :groan:

1399315 2015-04-25 12:14:00 Have a read of the following : www.pcreview.co.uk The logs are often very long and not that obvious as to what the problems are. wainuitech (129)
1399316 2015-04-25 21:12:00 Well got up at 2am for a pitt stop and thought I’d check progress. Up to 74% so back to bed.

Up again 7am and chkdsk must have finished and rebooted and here’s the fault in all its glory. Mouse and keyboard frozen. So another crash landing to start the day. :D

Rebooted into safe mode and followed the instructions in that link you provided Wainui and the most recent entry in the log says:

6417

So now I’m lost, a master merge with 80000 files changed loses me.

Oh and the link from the link you provided gives a 404 page not found here but the link itself is fine.

What a way to start the day.

1399317 2015-04-27 23:47:00 An update on this problem.

Decided to go right back to basics and disconnect everything and start again with a very basic Mouse and Keyboard only.

Damn thing still locked up, so seeing the Motherboard had onboard video I pulled out the graphics card as well and away she went. Hasn’t missed a beat since.

So I guess either the card is faulty or the drivers corrupted or the card wasn’t seated properly.

As I have no use for DVI out or S-Video on this machine I figure I won’t bother to fix something that is working fine so I’ll attach a note to the card and house it in the junk box with other troublesome bits I’ve accumulated over the years. :D

Thanks for the help Wainui.
