| 1398449 | 2015-04-12 05:55:00 | My current system has a Samsung 840 250GB SSD Drive which is showing only 4.72GB free space. I thought I was using the SSD only for storing programmes, with all data, downloads, etc being stored on other hard drives. Could someone please advise me the best way to increase the size of my C Drive and save/copy its existing contents. Is it worth my while to clean out the existing drive? If so, what do I keep? Obviously I need to purchase a larger SSD, so recommendations on which one to buy would also be appreciated. |

I always say copy/paste because if something goes wrong when doing it you lose nothing, cut / paste you run the risk of losing stuff if it turns pear shaped. Once the data is copied and confirmed its all OK and working then you can delete the originals freeing up space. Moving installed programs is a totally different matter. For resizing the partitions, theres a few programs, I use AOEMI free-partition-manager.html (www.disk-partition.com) you just drag the window to resize it. Have a look at the bottom of that page, give examples. You can make a bootable CD as well, this is how I do it normally. NOTE: This is on a windows Computer have not tried it on Linux. New SSD -- Samsung are still good, depends on how deep your pockets are :p |

I have a 256GB SSD myself and it's big enough for everything except my steam library which is on another drive. You can also use CCleaner to regain space, delete old restore points, move the swap file to another drive, manually move files (not programs as Wainui said). Unless you have huge programs or games like me you should easily be able to manage with the SSD you have. Turning off hibernation also saves a few gigs and with the speed SSD's boot is not really needed. The main thing that chews up space for me is game installations, I only have a few on the C: drive and the rest on the D: I bought a 512BG SSD but rather than reinstall windows I use it as my D: drive and install games on it. Both SSD's are now about half full. Next build will have a 1TB SSD as the main drive but I won't be doing that for some time, maybe not this year. Most programs need to be re-installed and can't be simply moved, some can though. World of warcraft for example can be freely moved to somewhere else and a new shortcut created and it'll work fine. If there's something specific you want to move google it and you might be lucky. As to recommendations, Samsung EVO drives or if there's enough of a price difference to make it worthwhile one of the crucial models. I am using both, samsung have a very small advantage on speed and are more popular, crucial sometimes offer much better prices for the same capacity and perform near enough the same. If the price is close though go for the Samsung. Or just find the best price for a name brand with a decent warranty - in truth the performance differences between current SSD's are mostly insignificant. |

Windows.old can be deleted unless you want to restore a previous version of windows, generally you get that when upgrading from one version to another. You may want to google the best way though as windows may block you from simply deleting it. I'd look but it's late and I have work in the morning. | dugimodo (138) | ||
| 1398454 | 2015-04-12 20:57:00 | Windows.old can easily take 10GB or more sometimes. have a read of the following to remove it : www.eightforums.com Check whats in the download folder as well, anything in there can be deleted or moved, it may be empty then again it may not looking at its date it was last used in January. |
