Stop focusing on such inconsequential amounts . They gave more to failed Americas cup challenges.

The three largest areas of total Crown expenditure for the 2013/14 financial year were:
Social security and welfare: $27.3 billion
Health: $14.3 billion

1387049 2014-10-29 21:47:00 I agree it is small potatoes but it has got to start somewhere and as for the Americas Cup that also is a waste. The three examples you give are at least core parts of Government spending, putting up a referendum of a poxy flag is not.Key wants a to leave a legacy. He wants a binding referendum, what a hypocrite he is... ruup (1827)

One small note about the Americas Cup - Yes, it is at the stage where it is a ridiculous amount of money just to enter a team but based on the economic outcome of previous America's Americas Cup events held in NZ, the benefits are HUGE especially if you are in a business or service that is in a feeder industry - TV Media advertising, Hotel/hospitality, restaurant, taxi cab, boat building(repairs, sail making, design), IT, tour operator, car hire etc.

As to replacing crown cars - it would be part of their lease agreement. Lots of companies do that regularly.

A referendum over a new flag - well how else do you let the country decide? We are a democratic country so we take a vote.

1387051 2014-10-29 22:44:00 As I implied in another posting, the flag referendum is designed to distract the chattering masses away from the real prospect of loss of sovereignty if the Trans Pacific Partnership deal is concluded. Terry Porritt (14)

Agreed. An incredible waste of time and money organising the referendum.
