1387450 2014-11-02 02:00:00 In the 70's I lived in a reasonably affluent middle class neighbourhood in Houston, Tx. The local kids (or their parents) put something into the event, mostly dressed in some kind of costume. They were always accompanied by an adult who stood at the gate or on the pavement.

Then there was the seedier side. Carloads of black or Mexican kids would arrive at the end of the street, and like a sea of locusts swarm up and down marauding for whatever they could coerce from sometimes frightened and intimidated householders. These young thugs would invariably have large shopping baskets in which to carry the loot. And supervising adults? Sitting in their car / bus at the end of the street drinking a beer or smoking a joint.

God forbid our society could develop into that. Like Roscoe, that's the reason why I won't have anything to do with it.

3news last night had some wealthy aucklanders complaining that poor people come around during Halloween for the better sweets

Meh. Bring back child labour and give them a useful existence.
