All I am saying is treat forestry in NZ as a special case and ensure people are paid commiserate with the danger or leave the trees be. I think the pioneers did more slash and burn to clear forests like cut around the edges pile the stuff up and light next summer technique. If they had of had Stihls they would have raced from Cape Maria van Diemen to Bluff and whacked down every tree. Hmmm, dont know that Forestry is any more dangerous than Mining or the likes of Bridge building or Commercial Construction. They all have their risks if you dont know what youre doing. And whilst there was a lot of Slash & Burn for scrub a 100 years ago there was also a lot of Milling and God only knows how they got some of those giant Kauris down and out of the bush. They were so entangled with other trees it must have been anybodys guess which way they would actually fall, if they fell at all, and what they would bring with them if they did. Ive got quite a bit of literature on the Trounson Kauri Park up north (my mother was a Trounson) and dont you believe Forestry is more dangerous now than it was then. :) |

| 1387366 | 2014-11-17 07:05:00 | When I was hydraulics man Treescape got me to put on an extra valve bank on their large log splitter, the reason being a Pacific Islander chopped his hand off (spare hand not the one pulling down the valve bank down lever) on it. The other valve bank? so that the person has to put their hand on this one as well to make the anvil come down, so no free hand. Treescape sold the splitter to a company at the end of Birdswood rood who rung me to fix a blown hose. The second valve bank now had a piece of wood wedged under the spool right from the first day of their operation with it. The stupid gene will never die out it looks like. | prefect (6291) | ||

Beam go on it a couple of months ago. Rendered machine useless till fixed. The worst you can do is get your hand underneath the foot operated clamp. Seen a few people panic thinking the blade would come down and rip there hand out ripping skin instead of just taking foot off peddle. | plod (107) | ||

Some may remember the old Dead Mans Handle used in Trams and Trains and a few other bits of machinery. No problem, put your lunch box on it and stack a few zzzzzzzzzzs. Man will always find a way to override safety provisions. |
