1387350 2014-11-16 04:22:00 I had to pop some heart pills when I saw Helen Kelly nominated here for leader of the labor party. You buggers wouldn't have a leg to stand on criticizing me calling her a commie, she is red as. I however think what she has done in her campaign about deaths in the woods is truly admirable. My thoughts are **** the economics if you have pay someone minimum wages to process trees at a profit leave the ******* trees alone until the price climbs high enough to pay the processors really good money. If its never economic to harvest and pay high wages **** the forest owners.I think the forestry operation in NZ is a special case its like a war zone because of steep slopes and trees which hang up prefect (6291)

Thank God she's not listed. They're all as useless as tits on a bull and one more only vies to act as a final nail ...

My dear old thing, have you ever stopped to think how many acres were cleared by our forefathers with relativity few accidents?

The problem is this self-serving outfit called OSH have brainwashed an extraordinary number of people into believing that once they don their High-Vis-Vest, Hard-Hat, Safety Glasses, Earmuffs, Steel capped Boots and so on, they are indestructible.

The truth is that if you get hit by a “Widow Maker” you’re stuffed, along with your Hard-hat, Safety Glasses and Earmuffs.

To make matters worse, if you find yourself in a situation of “Feet do your stuff, your body’s in trouble” you can hardly move for bloody safety gear.

Teach the new boys basics like what to look for, what to listen for, where to stand, etc. and we’ll improve the accident rate.

I saw a sign in Aus a while ago that read:

“Your Safety is our concern, but your responsibility!”

I thought it explained the situation very well. ;)

I second that!

Have been working on various sites for years now, and only had 2 bumps on my head, 1 was because some muppet didn't put the right nails into a 6x2 and it dropped, the other was because I couldn't see above my head because I was wearing a hardhat !:waughh:

I dont disagree with you at all, forestry operations are dangerous and people will always get killed . All I am saying is treat forestry in NZ as a special case and ensure people are paid commiserate with the danger or leave the trees be . I think the pioneers did more slash and burn to clear forests like cut around the edges pile the stuff up and light next summer technique . If they had of had Stihls they would have raced from Cape Maria van Diemen to Bluff and whacked down every tree .

Yes but they used hand tools and horses.
It's carelessness these days....and the machines ensure the damage is major.

Down South, we knew a certain person in one of the logging companies.
This moron:

Attempted to jump back on to a moving, running tractor and was run over.
Had a large trunk on a slope, positions it not end on down slope but the other way.....then stands in front of it and proceeds to cut it's branches off.

Naturally it then rolled down the slope, over him.

Husband watched him use his chainsaw at home a couple of times, he was horrified at his careless manner and techniques.

He was the safety officer.
The incidents I mentioned were apparently not the only ones, he was a regular with ACC.

Log splitters - used a neighbours for a while. She demonstrated then I used it. So no proper "training", no safety gear, just the idea that you DON'T get your hands anywhere near the splitting part when it moves. Quite simple really....
