1398828 2015-04-19 00:35:00 Hard to believe Kame, often see people talking about turning off the page file but in practice it causes more hassles than it's worth. When I first went from 4 - 8GB I thought I'd never need a swap file again so I turned it off. Windows and various applications started complaining almost immediately. Some software is written tot expect it and just doesn't work well without it. Try reading this is pretty good lifehacker.com It's a bit old though and I don't think the MSSE recommendation would stand today. dugimodo (138)
1398829 2015-04-19 03:12:00 To be fair, feersumendjinn, I think you misread pctek. She agreed with you (+1) and disagreed with the OP who claimed he couldn't be getting the error because of how much RAM he had.

That's how I read it, anyway.

Try reading what I wrote. I agreed with you.

1398831 2015-04-19 03:36:00 So I looked at his article and his other article and think this guy downs every optimisation technique out there. I didn't know if he was being serious or joking to be honest. If I got to the end of his article I would be expecting to see psyched.

I've done away with a swap file for decades now, if you can maintain your computer efficiently there's no reason for it. The only program I recall complaining was Photoshop but it was a warning and I never had problems.

I'm expecting to see more complaints with RAM filesystems/disks in the future, expected it sooner but it hasn't got MS hype behind it yet.

Cheers,

KK

1398832 2015-04-19 09:18:00 i too have done away with the swap ever since running xp on 1GB of ram.

the only problems i would encounter would be a game crashing when it ran out of ram during loading due to me forgetting to close 100 tabs of firefox.

windows 7 made this annoying by bitching when less than 800MB of memory (real or otherwise) remains, bringing you back to desktop with no readily avaible option to dismiss and never see it again.

today i have the smallest pagefile windows wont complain about, usually less than 1GB. always on the ssd, always dynamicly sized.

1398833 2015-04-19 09:26:00 bitching is ok but ***** is not, i don't get it. Mirddes (10)
1398834 2015-04-19 23:08:00 I wouldnt disable the pagefile, it can cause issues (Ive had a printer refuse to print without a pagefile)
If you have enough RAM, what difference will it make anyway. Win should use the available ram before reverting to virtual memory

1398835 2015-04-21 07:28:00 There's no right or wrong answer in terms of page file, I've had setups where I've used and not used a page file. A page file is good, if you have low to medium RAM installed (I'm thinking 2-8GB here) it allows the OS to prioritise what's resident in memory (RAM) to the items that are currently in use. The lower priority stuff then get's swapped to the page file making it available if need be but without compromising the apps/processes that need the speed associated with swapping requests in and out of your RAM.

I have 32GB of DDR3 memory and also have an 8GB page file running off my primary SSD. Obviously I'm at the high end of the scale in terms of memory but I've never had and issue not running with a page file and that was when I only had 8GB of memory.

Horses for course really, if you see issues without a page file then probably better to use one, and if you don't well then no harm really.

It's really about personal preference and what your system behaves like with or without a page file. As with anything it's about tweaking your settings until you find the right balance.
