You may install one copy of the software on one computer. What can happen is when the new OS looks at what you currently have it will de-activate the current install and activate the New. You "may" be able to install it, but it will be against the licence agreement, esp if the W10 uses the same key." When I bought Windows 7,I bought a Family Pack (up to 3 Computers) only one is in use,so in theory can I use one of the licenses as a dual boot? |

| 1398607 | 2015-04-16 04:41:00 | That's what I'm afraid will happen. I won't want to install 7 just to upgrade to 10 | gary67 (56) | ||

Awhhhh thats completely different. :) most people may only have a OEM / Single user. Although if you have a 3 user license then you should be able to. Bit like a 3 user Office License, doesn't matter what computer its on as long as its not used more than 3 times. To answer that question, may have to wait and see, so far have not actually seen any documentation that says yes or no as to whether a W7 8/8.1 key will install/active a upgrade W10 as a stand alone install---- Maybe nmercer can supply an answer ( who works for MS) |

| 1398609 | 2015-04-16 05:52:00 | Licence agreements are inconsistent with MS. Windows 7 and windows 8.1 OEM licensing are worded such that the OS is tied to the hardware and not supposed to be sold separately or transferred to another machine. In between those two however the licensing agreement for windows 8 OEM says you can sell it seperately and you can transfer it onto new hardware. www.microsoft.com Not sure where that leaves me as I never purchased 8.1 OEM but my OEM windows 8 has been upgraded for free. Therefore I have 8.1 but only purchased 8, which license do I refer to? Not that it matters, I tend to sell the OS with my old computers and buy a new one. Much easier to sell as a working PC I find. Until it's released all we have to go on is past experience and assumption. In the past upgrade versions have always been supplied with their own key, and have always been able to be used for a clean install or a dual boot setup although maybe requiring a bit of a workaround for installation. My assumption is that it's likely to be the same again but I just don't know. I doubt that MS have spread their intentions around to all their employees either. |
