2014-11-01 03:29:00 | You're both scrooges. Not at all. Just sick of all the Americanisms taking over Kiwiland. It's not a Kiwi tradition. It's an American one - at least it's an Irish tradition messed up by the Americans. Why do we want to copy the stupid Americans? I'd rather celebrate a Kiwi tradition, such as ANZAC day. Means so much more. Unfortunately there are too many Kiwis who are easily led into such inane Americanisms. That's the reason why I won't have anything to do with it.

2014-11-01 07:19:00 | I have no idea what is all about, and do not want to know, certainly not from my tradition. I found collecting for Guy Fawkes in my youth a bit of a laugh.

It's been around a lot longer than Americans. So the Irish took it over there - so? Anzac day is not a kiddie event. Halloween is a chance for kids to dressup and get free lollies......can't see anything terrible about that. It's about the kids you know..... |

2014-11-01 20:51:00 | I only had 5 in total. 1 lot of 2 and another lot of 3. The 2 were a couple of little kids with an adult all dressed up and they politely took one sweet each till I told them to dig in, but even then little hands do not grab much and lots of Thank you's after that including one from the adult. The group of 3 were older, no costumes no manners and their handfuls were much bigger, that was a disappointment all round. There was one of those Light Parties hosted about 2kms away at the Halswell Domain so I think that is where most went. Personally I do not like the religious connotations of that and I think the Christians have stolen enough celebratory days already.

2014-11-01 21:53:00 | ~ inane Americanisms. That's the reason why I won't have anything to do with it. In the 70's I lived in a reasonably affluent middle class neighbourhood in Houston, Tx. The local kids (or their parents) put something into the event, mostly dressed in some kind of costume. They were always accompanied by an adult who stood at the gate or on the pavement. Then there was the seedier side. Carloads of black or Mexican kids would arrive at the end of the street, and like a sea of locusts swarm up and down marauding for whatever they could coerce from sometimes frightened and intimidated householders. These young thugs would invariably have large shopping baskets in which to carry the loot. And supervising adults? Sitting in their car / bus at the end of the street drinking a beer or smoking a joint. God forbid our society could develop into that. Like Roscoe, that's the reason why I won't have anything to do with it.

2014-11-02 00:19:00 | If people want to dress up or have parties it's all good fun, but I'm not fussed about the whole trick or treat thing . Nothing against the kids but why do we need to import American traditions . I don't buy any lollies I'd only eat them anyway, Nobody knocked this year but if they had I'd have said I don't have anything sorry . There's a shop across the road they could always go buy some lollies themselves . In fact that'd make more sense to me, let parents, friends, family, supply the kids and they can dress up and have fun - no need to be wandering around the streets .
