438068 2006-03-14 11:06:00 Hi everybody (Hi Dr Nick! lol)

Seriously, I recently purchased an Asus laptop (my first ever new computer- woo-hoo!), and I am wondering about which updates etc I need to download from the internet.

I've checked the internet/ PC World/ Netguide and am aware that I should at least have Windows XP SP 2, which I appear to already have. Thing is, SP 3 has just come out- should I download this too? What about the safety patches referred to for MS Internet Explorer & Outlook (which I don't use since the press about it infers it is riddled with security holes). I've signed up for windows update- is this enough?

Also, for the laptop manufacturer- I was of the impression that I should download the most recent drivers for BIOS etc ASAP, but when I went into the website it indicated that I should only do this if I am having any problems.

Oh, I hate being a newbie, but I have to start somewhere... :D

Thanks in advance for your help people!

If it's not broken, why fix it? The only thing I can think of updating would be the graphics card assuming its NVidia or ATI.

I didn't realise Service Pack 3 for Windows XP was out?
Anywho there are programs that allow you to make a new CD with SP2 and all available updates all crammed into a new CD. You do of course need to download the updates themselves.

My personal favourite integration program: Nlite (http://www.nliteos.com/)

www.microsoft.com
Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP 3)

Apparently came out on 30/03/04.

I dunno, things are so much more complicated wince the old Win95 days... :)

Oh well, when I get this sorted, I can move on to getting Z to work using DosBox- yay! :D

438071 2006-03-15 05:54:00 Yup SP3 for MS Office, is out but this is for office, not windows .

XP is only up to SP2 at the mo, not SP3 .

So, unless you have MS Office and its installed, there's no point in getting SP3 for MS Office .

438072 2006-03-15 11:03:00 Thanks Speedy, I do have MS Office 2003, so I'll add that to my list of things to do! Sick Puppy (6959)
