438522 2006-03-16 01:45:00 I need to install a USB ADSL modem for a friend, but all their USB ports (2 of them) are being used.

My plan was to get a USB hub, plug that into one of the USB ports on the computer, and then plug their existing devices into the hub. The USB ADSL modem would then plug into the second (now free) port on the computer.

Question is - which would be the better option - an external hub, or an internal PCI card?

Cheers

438523 2006-03-16 01:49:00 if you get a hub make sure it's a powered one........otherwise the card is the better optoin and a lot cheaper too........very easy to install drcspy (146)
438524 2006-03-16 01:53:00 It maybe more reliable with a USB PCI card .

Like I use a USB 1 . 1 hub here . The only thing that does work in it atm is the scanner and the digital cam .

A mouse was plugged into it, but the mouse wouldnt always work in the hub, (even tho its powered), but worked better when plugged into the onboard USB port .

What a waste of a hub lol . 2 ports in use and 5 ports empty .

Altho most USB PCI cards are USB 2 . It'll be a waste plugging a USB 1 . 1 device into it . Unless you have USB 2 devices as well .

438525 2006-03-16 02:02:00 Thanks,

The two I was looking at (from a convenience point of view) were these:

USB 1.1 HUB (www.dse.co.nz)

or

PCI USB 1 Card (www.dse.co.nz)

I didn't figure speed (USB 1.1 vs USB 2) would be an issue, as it would only host a printer and a digital camera.

Thoughts?

438526 2006-03-16 02:07:00 Either should be OK. Altho I dont think USB asdl modems are that reliable either.

A PCI, or a modem that connects to the ethernet port, would be better / more reliable.

Sorry, just to clarify, are you suggesting a PCI ADSL modem, as opposed to a USB ADSL modem?

438529 2006-03-16 02:41:00 I don't like having a ADSL modem internally installed, USB / PCI. It makes for a very thin layer of insulation from hackers.

Call me a traditionalist, but this is the way I'd do it

External ADSL modem (Ethernet port)
