$29.95 IF you have tolls with them. Not everybody wants to swap their tolls company. So compare apples with apples - the full, undiscounted price is probably $39.95. The comparable plan over at Xnet is $42.95 for 1Mb and 5 gig, shifting in April to 2Mbs and 10gig for the same price, or $37.95 for 2mbs and 2 gig.

438592 2006-03-17 04:47:00 The new Xnet/WorldxChange 2mb 10 gig plan looks good. Does anyone here use them at the moment? I want to make sure that I will get close to the advertised speed & low latency before I spend $100 switching from Orcon.

The free national traffic will make it a bit less painfull for me to experiment with many different flavours of Linux (Providing the NZ mirror is actually hosted in NZ)

438593 2006-04-05 11:54:00 Hi there

For over 80% of our users (based on the usage profile of the customer base), the plans actually do work out better, because we HAVE increased the amount of free data that the plans start with - for example our 1G plan for $29.95 now has 2GB, the $39.95 plan now has 4GB instead of 1GB etc.

20% of our users were flat-rate and so some users are unhappy, however we are still giving users 40GB for the same price - which I think is pretty reasonable.

We had to increase the overage chages from $10/10GB to $10/5G because our costs have gone up. Telecom used to give us 10GB per user to play with, now they only give us 4GB before they start charging. While it's true that the new model is cheaper over 11.5GB, that doesn't help us at our old average of 9GB because we didn't used to pay anything for backhaul for those users.

Bear in mind that our overage charges are still 10 times cheaper than Xtra, and every one of our plans either provides more data or is cheaper than Xtra's plans. In addition to the fact that overage is 10 times cheaper, we think we're still providing good value for money.

Basically if you're a very heavy user, then yes our plans will now work out more expensive - but for most users they are an improvement in speed and pricing.

438594 2006-04-05 11:58:00 PS - if you don't believe me, have a look at our comparison widget which can be found by going here

www.orcon.net.nz

this clearly shows that Orcon provides better value than Xtra on every single plan - so I don't know why users would be thinking of leaving us to go back to Xtra.

If you look at what the other ISPs have done with the new services (most ISPs released their new plans after us), then generally across the board there have been similar changes to the ones that Orcon has made, because with Telecom's new wholesale prices, anything else simply wouln't work.

438595 2006-04-05 13:04:00 Hi Seeby,

The reason the price seems to be going up for me though is because I have not gone with the toll calls (though I can't find an easy comparison between orcon and telecom toll calls, and toll calls are important for us because of mobile and overseas calls we make, usually costing us over $100 per month just for toll calls).

Also, it's unclear to me what happens when you go over the limit, it says no speed restriction but you pay $10/5GB, does that mean if you do 1GB over your limit are you going to charge $10 or is it going to be more like $2, or do you have to actually reach the whole 5GB before charged?

In some respect I would prefer to be restricted than have to pay more as I prefer the one price and unlimited seems well over what I would want to spend for internet.

Usually I do 3GBs on average but some months I end up doing about 8GBs and other months far less, like this month mainly due to the recent release of Fedora Core 5.

I don't think people are looking to switch to Xtra (usually loyal Telecom account holders use them and do not know any better, also with some people that I've setup their broadband with, they didn't realise they could use an alternative because they use Telecom lines), but users of Orcon are looking for alternative ISPs because of the changes, and I think due to the price increase for not being with Orcon Tolls.

Does the traffic made to local/national servers affect our usuage, or does Orcon have any particular networks that don't affect our usuage? I know some ISPs have this.

Also, Static IPs, do we keep it if we had one or is it going to be dynamic now?

The only reason I would see myself changing is because the price is $10 more, unless switching to Orcon Tolls (which also needs to be beneficial or at least the same as what Telecom offers), otherwise it's still the same plan, just downgraded slightly but does not affect me any differently.

Cheers,

KK

Well Seeby not quite true. I was on the 256K unlimited plan for $49.95 . Now I am on the 256K 40Gig plan for $59.95 and increase of $10.00 for less though I never or unlikley to ever exceeded 40 gig.. I was hopping you would have retained the $49.95 plan and moved us to 2Meg with a 40 Gig limit..

I'm also in the same boat, getting less for more, although 40Gb is a very reasonable cap for my uses,
It would have perhaps been nice if along with the price increase there was a speed increase, But at the end of the day telecom is a monopoly and they control the lines and set the limits to what other isps can do with what they are given

I am with xnet. I chose them in January because I didn't have to take their tolls. I've just moved up from the $29.95 256Kb/1GB plan to the $37.95 2Mb/2GB plan with no problems.

Someone asked how they are. I've only been with them since Janurary but I've only had two outages. One or 5 minutes and another of ten minutes and one of those was in the wee hours.

Xnet have been advertising their plans for a few weeks before April. The only thing that changed was tacking on the overages plan, three choices Throttle back, $1 per 100MB or $5 per 5GB.

I think I would have been happy with the same speed and brought the $5 per 5GB but the overages are not available to the entry level plan.
