438687 2006-03-16 12:40:00 When trying to start my computer this message appears,

We apologise for the inconvenience but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might caused it.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedley,or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most resent settings that worked.
If a previous start-up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (Your most recent setting that worked)
Start windows Normally

Use the up and down keys to select

I've tried to start it in every one of these but this message keeps appearing.
As it tries to start, a funny noise comes from the tower unit.

Just before this message appeares a quick flash of a blue screen can be seen, I've had this before and if it's the same one it reads kernal page stack error.

I'm running Windows XP pro.

Hope some can help me many thanks.

438689 2006-03-17 03:14:00 Could be a faulty motherboard component assembly.
RAM rarely goes spongy-pud this way.

438691 2006-03-17 16:04:00 hmm...how far into the load of windows does it get in regular mode before it bombs?

Edit:

I just read the rest of your post...that funny noise is a cylinder(or more) in your hard drive rattling around. FYI if a spec of dust gets between 2 cylinders, they are so close together that that 1 spec of dust will scratch, if not dislodge your cylinders. best fix: Buy a new hard drive. when you hear that buzzing sound that isn't coming from your fan - drop the flag to half staff, and shoot the harddrive(most of the time...and be sure to utilize proper safety techniques while fireing a live weapon...EG - look down the barrel, to make sure nothing is clogging it...give the trigger a few test pulls before shooting (gun must be loaded to see if something isn't working) for maximun effect, test the trigger WHILE looking down the barrel) (lol jk, i hope I don't HAVE to say that, but some people...)

sorry to say, your HD is toast...but hey, you needed an upgrade anyways...if I had seen this sooner, I could have told you about a brand new seagate 300GB HD(I know Seagate sucks, but they have a 5Year Warrenty, so I think they may be doing better) for 79.99 after rebate...keep watching this forums, I will post the next great deal I see...either way, best place to shop for HD (if you don't mind waiting for shipping) is www.outpost.comOutpost.com, http: www.supergooddeals.com (I know, I laughed at that name, too) Another one is http: they don't sell, they just look for the best advertised prices, and post, you can usually buy from the sites they link you to.
