| 439144 | 2006-03-19 04:39:00 | A while back my HDD died and not confident about installing a new one I took the machine to a shop where a new HDD was installed. The shop also installed Nero6 (even though a newer version was available). Since then I've been unable to burn CDs altho' I can play them and the first time I used Nero, it crashed and Windows files were 'removed to prevent further damage'. Nothing appeared in my CD drive on My Computer except an icon. I uninstalled Nero as I'd never needed it on the old HDD. Today I installed the original CD disc (Primo Prassi) and seem to be able to burn again but I still cannot read DVDs like I used to be able to. I'd like to be able to read DVDs again. What am I missing please? A DVD reader or something? Can you recommend a safe freebie? I'd appreciate your input as I'm a bit lost here. Thank you. |

Today I installed the original CD disc (Primo Prassi) and seem to be able to burn again ... . However, why didn't you ask the shop to do the job properly? I assume you paid them? |

I'd appreciate your input as I'm a bit lost here. Your DVD drive should have come with DVD playing software. I never bothered looking at the free ones because I've aquired about 4 copies of Cyberlink DVD player through various hardware purchases. I think that Nero media player can play DVDs too |

| 439147 | 2006-03-20 10:07:00 | GrahamL : It was a HDD the shop installed, but in doing so I "lost" my CD player which also used to read DVDs. (I think. Maybe it was some other software?) Windows didn't appear to recognise my Atapi CD. Now, when I go to My Computer and right click the CD drive it is empty. As if the path to it has been "lost". The shop did a rotten job actually. With a little help I might have done better myself but I'm a malware fighter, not an OS expert. (I always select the wrong place to start.... :illogical ) Nothing worked as well as before but I'm slowly sorting it out. I think....... I hope..... Greven: I think the shop intended for me to use Nero to burn CDs and read DVDs. Sadly, it crashed the first time I used it, but I still have the disc; I just prefer to install the latest versions and was disappointed they gave me Nero 6 when 7 was already out. I cannot remember how it all went together on the old HDD; my brain needs new RAM.... I appreciate your help guys; many thanks. I live in the sticks which is why I didn't go back to the shop to moan and whine. When I got home, plugged it in and saw I'd also "lost" Publisher, Excel, and several other apps I can reinstall I really didn't want to go back there.... After all I'd given them a Belarc copy of what was originally running and also sent in all the discs that came with the machine. They lost the Belarc and my printer manual and failed to install the printer correctly and I was afraid they'd just make things a whole lot worse. My next trick will be studying all about these mysteries.....when I finish working 16 hour days. Any help you can give will be appreciated. Thank you both. |
