439064 2006-03-18 08:45:00 Hi,
Everytime I make a new shortcut on the desktop I get two of them.
One with the application icon the other with windows icon.
If i delete any 1 of them they both go, likewise if I restore any 1 they both come back.

Any idears how to fix this annoyance please.

439065 2006-03-18 16:32:00 This is one of the reasons why I dumped 2000 and got XP...kinda outa the frying pan...

But anyway, I had a friend who swears it was that way on his 2000 installation until he got rid of Windows Messenger......can't say it doesn't make some sense, but it is kinda muddy. I guess it's possible for the doubling because of the dual messengers installed.

I, on the other hand, never solved this mystery and just fdisc'd the whole thing and went to XP. Sorry I never felt challenged enough to tough it out and figger out what was wrong, but your complaint is the same one I had about 2000....among others. :D

439066 2006-03-18 20:34:00 How are you making the shortcut icons, and from what location - eg the Desktop? Does this only occur with the ones you manually create and not the others put there by a program installation? Jen (38)
439067 2006-03-19 01:38:00 Hi Jen,
I get double icons both when I right click on desktop and create shortcut and when a new application is installed.
If I delete any 1 of them they both dissapear but there is only 1 showing in recycle bin which if restored puts 2 back on desktop.
Both have the same properties.
Only 1 appears in "docs & settings/me/desktop.
None appear in other users desktop.
Un-installing the application gets rid of both desktop icons.

This only started happening about 3 weeks ago (been using win2k about 4 years) I do not recall doing anything that might have caused this.
spybot, adware, pest patrol, spy sweeper and avg all up to date and all run clean. I do have zonealarm as a fire wall up.
Messenger is disabled in admin tools/component svcs/svcs, has been for about 9 months now.
Phil.
PS If I create a shortcut in the right hand frame of windows explorer I only get 1 icon which works OK.

439068 2006-03-19 01:55:00 Could be a profile corruption, you are creating a short cut for YOUR desktop and another is being created for ALL USER desktop.

To test, create another user account, sign on with that and then create a new desktop short cut. If not doubled up, you have the answer, if it is doubled up, you have another problem.

439069 2006-03-19 04:32:00 Hi
Yes, created a new user and I didn't get a double up on shortcut icon.

However, when I looked in the desktop folder for all users there was no second erronius icon. This is so when signed in as me as well.

So, how do I fix this corrupted profile ghost icon ?
Cheers,
Phil

439070 2006-03-19 04:41:00 It's not your imagination (groups.google.co.nz/group/microsoft.public.windowsnt.terminalserver.applicat ions/browse_thread/thread/74f2f8c8584467a/a8e1cd4721cc83fc%23a8e1cd4721cc83fc) ;) ; other people have had it happen too. It looks as if noone had an answer then, either. Graham L (2)
439071 2006-03-19 05:48:00 I have a (lame) work arround.
I place (any) 1 icon exactly on top of the other so only see 1.
The short cut still works Ok and Windows is so dumb that it doesn't seperate them at boot up or when "line up icons" is used !
Not ideal but looks better.
Cheers.

439072 2006-03-20 02:58:00 Hi, will, you now know that the issue is your profile...

There is unfortunately no easy solution to this. You could backup up your favourite, mail and any docs, login as another user, delete the defunk profile and relogin which will create new profile from default user profile then restore your backup, mail setting etc.

Or delete the user AFTER noting ISP, pop3 mail settings, mp3 licences and doc's backed up!

439073 2006-03-20 22:07:00 Thanks Solmiester,
Unfortunately your reply is gobblegy gook to me, I'm only very marginally computer literate.
Perhaps you could elborate on the "big" words please.
