| 438824 | 2006-03-17 07:57:00 | Hi While I happily work away on my Linux PC the family stick to XP (Home). Because I don't use the XP PC, sometimes disasters happen that I have not foreseen. The other day logins began to take "a fortnight". THe problem was that the c: was right full. So when I was notified of the problem I: - shifted the swap file to another drive - turned off the system restore. THis resulted in about 400M of spare space - not a lot but enough to buy some time to uninstall and reinstall apps to a new location. So far so good ... After things settled down it became obvious that some accounts have somewhat turned to "custard" - including the Admin equivalent account. Some other accounts are just fine. The ones that are not fine have the following errors as examples: 1. cannot enter recycle bin - clicking goes nowhere 2. cannot change desktop - can select a graphic but no change happens 3. task bar is locked - cannot remove the tick. There are no icons in the system tray and there is no quick launch area. 4. Windows are rather grey looking. I tried to go into Safe Mode with F8 - but the system ignores me. So I used msconfig to set the startup to safe mode and rebooted. The full Administrator account seems fine. Give me my stable Linux system anyday! Any ideas about what could have happened to some accounts and not others? Thanks John |

| 438825 | 2006-03-18 08:05:00 | A small bit of progress: 1. The trouble to do with using F8 was obvious - I purchased a new fancy keyboard recently with multiple function F1-12 keys - the selection button was in the wrong place and so F8 was not working! 2. I have recreated some of the accounts that were partially working - seems the registry has partially gone bung for some users! |
