| 439074 | 2006-03-21 06:29:00 | If your current user account is corrupted, this could be behind the desktop icon quirks you are seeing. Solmiester is suggesting that you could start again with a new account, and copy across all your personal data eg emails, music, internet browser bookmarks/favourites, files and other settings such as email client settings. A fresh start. There is no harm in just creating a new account to test out whether the destkop icon duplication occurs with that account as well first. If the problem continues, then the problem lies elsewhere. If it fixes the problem, then look at transferring your personal data into the new account. To create a new account go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Users and Passwords. Under the Users tab, click the Add button and then follow your nose. When finished, log off the machine and then log on with the new username account. Play around with the desktop icons and see if you can replicate the problem. |

| 439075 | 2006-03-21 08:35:00 | Hi Jen, See posting 5 and 6 in this thread. I created a new user and the 2x icon didn't happen in this new user. So my profile seems to be corrupted. I didn't completly understand Solimeisters reply. So in this new user I copy ALL my files and data and delet my old user ? Please confirm this before I incur a further complete re-install of Win 2k and all apps. Regards, Phil |

| 439077 | 2006-03-21 14:08:00 | this is probably a rather long shot, but your problem might come from a setting similar to that where you can save a web-page to disk - there is an option to manage the web page (.html) and the folder of the webpage's images etc as either 2 seperate icons or 1, and whether to delete both at the same time or not... If you have some sort of web desktop enabled, something of the sort might be occurring (I have no idea how, but windows does some screwy things) On the other hand it's most likely a user profile problem. :waughh: |
