438871 2006-03-17 20:50:00 I saw no budget in the other posts, how much are you looking at spending? The_End_Of_Reality (334)
438872 2006-03-18 03:50:00 started out trying to stay under $1300 but no show of this
Now raised my sights to $1600 but will probably have to go a bit higher still to get something that will do what is needed.
Currently considering a Acer 5001WMLi at $1398 with a memory up grade to 1 or 2 Gb which will cost somewhere between $216 and $260.
So will probably max out at about $1700 :-((

438873 2006-03-19 01:30:00 Talk to the course supervisor. They'll they know what's avaiilable, and what is any good. Graham L (2)
438874 2006-03-19 03:41:00 I wouldn't state that as an absolute, I have talked to many people in many different computer related feilds who have next to no knowledge about whats in their system, its real world capabilities, or whats available on the market.

Tutors, programmers, network techs, hell, even a number of people who charge real money for taking a screwdriver to the internals.

It does explain the purchase of Macs and Dells though........

438876 2006-03-20 22:12:00 Well, it seems that the "seperate graphics card" means that the video has its own dedicated ram and doesn't share the main ram. (finally found someone at Uni that had an inkling of computers).
Looks like we are going to have to bite the bullet and shell out for a Asus A6VM plus a 512 upgrade.

Any opinions on this box good or otherwise.
Cheers, Phil.

438877 2006-03-20 22:25:00 I'd get one of the core duos for graphic design. Photoshop in particular is multithreaded. The Toshiba Tecra A6 or A7 with a RAM upgrade would do the trick nicely. E|im (87)
438878 2006-03-21 07:43:00 If you get a latptop dealer that lets you customise then you can normally get a laptop with a graphics card for $2500, but they are low-end graphics cards, for a more powerful one with graphics card you are looking at $3000 I think.

I don't know to much about the mid-range laptop market, most of my reading on laptops is aimed at low-end ($1000-1500), high end ($3500-4500)
