438724 2006-03-16 23:32:00 I have an older PC that i want to be able to use my ADSL connections, just in case i get into trouble with my newer one.
The older PC had previously run on dialup connection, but i am having problems connecting it up to the adsl.
I brought a fast ethernet card and placed it into the socket were the dialup modem was previously, and connected everything else up, but when i went to put the cable into the cards socket it doesn't click into it as my new PC does, its shaped the same and all that but it doesn't sit in there properly and can just full out easily, i get everything going ok but can not get a connection going for the internet, as i went into internet properties and the icon shows a red cross throught it and says cable not connected.
Has anyone come accross this before ? could it be a faulty ethernet card ?
its got me stuffed why it won't connect properly, any thought antone ?

438725 2006-03-16 23:52:00 Try plugging the ethernet cable into the card with the card removed to test that it does/does not fit properly. Sometimes due to small dimensional difference with cards, motherboard positions relative to case etc, there can be slight fouling of the ethernet plug with the edge of the slot opening. This can prevent the plug latching and making a proper connection.

If this is the situation, you could try slackening the motherboard screws to get the ethernet card more central in the slot, then re-tighten.

Nope, its the same deal with it out of the case, it fits ok into it but there's no click like it normaly does

438727 2006-03-17 00:10:00 I assume you tried more than one cable. On some cables, the "ear" will lie flat, and not engage the notch and, of course, it could just be a bad cable.

I believe the catch mechanism is pretty simple: just a notch and the ear "pops up" to engage it.

Well, it sounds as though the socket on the new card is faulty, so I'd take it back and change it. Maybe take your cable with you to check it fits a replacement card.

Yeah, I think that would be the best thing to do, thanks for the help anyway
