| 439374 | 2006-03-20 09:21:00 | Just signed someone up for basic broadband. Supposed to be a 256mb connection however the Xtra Broadband Speed Test Meter & it says were getting approximately 117.3 Kbps or 14.4 K bytes/sec. So that is less than half the "advertsied" speed. Should we be satisfied with that?? It actually seems like dial up to me when using it. Im wondering weather we start looking at the house wiring as a cause of such a low speed or are we getting what we should (6 times faster than dial up)?? Cheers KiwiMR2 |

Well were in Papakowhai, so around 2.0 km's from Porirua phone exchange (which Im pretty sure is a BIG one) and again 2-3 km's from the Plimmerton phone exchange. So that being said you think we might need the house wiring at the jack point looked at?? Cheers KiwiMR2 |

| 439377 | 2006-03-20 09:59:00 | Last time that happened to me, our line entry point was completely nutted. I could use other words, but this a family forum. What line speed does your router report? |

What line speed does your router report? How would I check the line speed via the router?? I have a D-link DSL-G604T . Could also be your circuit to the exchange, at 2 kms you should get a good speed . Yeah that's what i was thinking . We called the guy that wired up the house wiring & he said it's all in good order with decent new wiring & it would be something to do with the feed into the house . Cheers KiwiMR2 |

| 439381 | 2006-03-20 10:11:00 | wow that is a bad drop. I have 2mbps, I live 4.5-5km from the phone exchange and I normally have between 1.6-1.9kbps, average 1.7mbps. However this is a rural exchange so it doesn't have many broadband users on it, maybe you could check with any neighbours who might have broadband and see what results they are getting, if they are getting good speeds then maybe you should look at the connections/wiring. e.g. Telecom kept saying that our exchange couldn't get broadband. Then one day in about october last year noticed that our exchange still had some terracota coil in the lines which was technology from the 50's that was designed to lower interferrance with fences, and it was out dated in the 70's, he removed that and BAM we could get full speed broadband. P.S. try www.testmy.net and tell us what speeds that gives you |
