439260 2006-03-19 20:51:00 I just built a new PC and am having problems when trying to perform a soft restart. The PC hangs up on the POST screen and will not boot up. I have no problems booting up with a shutdown/power on cycle but any restart or using the reset button on results in the hang-up on the POST screen. Any suggestions? PJS32000 (10022)
439261 2006-03-19 23:28:00 It's not going to be a O/S problem, since it's happening at POST.

I've seen this before, in particular with "off brand" equipment. The hardware is failing to completely initialize during a warm boot.

You can see if there's updated BIOS for your motherboard. Your video card might allow a Flash update also.

439263 2006-03-19 23:38:00 Is the system detecting the ide devices??

Does it show the ide devices on the post screen, then hang?

Or doesnt it get this far?

If you're using SATA hdd's, I would make sure the cables for the hdd/s are in properly.

439264 2006-03-19 23:45:00 I've pinpointed the problem somewhat. I'm trying to install 2 HDDs, a new SATA drive with Windows XP already installed, and the PATA drive from my old PC. I was running my PC w/o the PATA drive for awhile and it worked normally, so the PATA drive is causing the problem.

In response to Speedy:

YES

Does it show the ide devices on the post screen, then hang?

YES, THIS IS EXACTLY WHERE IT'S FREEZING UP.

I've researched a bit and keep hearing to set the HDD boot priority in the BIOS to boot from the SATA drive first. When I go into that option, only 1 HDD is listed, my SATA drive so I'm not sure what to do. The SATA drive is listed as IDE #3 Master, the PATA drive is IDE #2 Slave. I've tried making the PATA drive a Master, but then the PC hangs at the same point, regardless of a hard or soft reboot.

439266 2006-03-19 23:51:00 Hmm Ok.

So, you took the SATA out of a running system, and you're trying to get it to boot on this system you've just built??

What's the motherboard on this new system??

If the SATA is onboard (it sounds like it is), it should either be 3rd or 4th Master, and set to either 3rd or 4th Master in the BIOS. And change the SATA to the bootdisk, if its got the OS on it.

Since SATA 's dont use Slaves, I would put the PATA on Primary Master. Not Primary Slave. And jumper the PATA to Master (or MA).

Not exactly. The SATA drive is brand new. I set up the new PC without messing with my old PATA HDD to get up and running first. Now I'm trying to add the old PATA HDD to the PC I just built. I'm not sure if it's important (I'm a noob) but the PATA drive has Windows 2000 on it.

SATA is onboard. The SATA HDD is listed as channel #3 Master when it's detected on the POST screen and in the BIOS. The PATA is currently being detected as channel #2 Slave on the POST screen but when I get to the BIOS it's not listed. If I manually go to the channel #2 slave device in the BIOS and tell it to auto detect a device, the PATA HDD appears, but it's not showing up automatically like the SATA drive does. My optical drives are on channel #1.

I'm not sure how to change the bootdisk to SATA, I don't think I have an option to choose between booting from SATA or PATA. My BIOS lists a boot device priority, I have it set as floppy, then CD ROM, then HDD. There is also a secondary HDD boot priority list, however the only HDD listed there is the SATA drive (which is what I want anyway). The PATA drive isn't listed here for some reason.

You're saying I should connect the PATA drive to IDE1 on the mobo and also jumper it as a master? I haven't tried that. Like I said before, when jumpered to master I couldn't boot at all but I didn't try on the other IDE port.

I did the quick test and got no errors.

439269 2006-03-20 02:25:00 Ok, I've dl the manual for this now.

1. You've connected a spare molex connector to ATX4P1? If youre using PCI-E slots.

2. The line on the PATA cable is going to pin 1 on the back of the hdd, and to pin 1 on the mobo connector?

3. You're not trying to run the hdd's in RAID? Raid isnt enabled in the BIOS?

4. Whatever the PATA is on now (Should be IDE Channel 1 Master I think), and its jumpered to Master. Go into the BIOS, go to Channel 1 Master, and press enter to go into it and put it on AUTO, then press Esc. The name/brand of the hdd should appear.

5. Change the bootdisk to hdd, so it shows the hdd first instead of the floppy. Make sure there's no floppy in the diskdrive, if u have one.
