Yes unfortunately, wireless is yet to reach a lot of new zealand but its coverage in new zealand is increasing all the time so hopefully Big John, wireless does get to your area sometime and therefore give you the chance to have a variety of broadband options :-) not sure though what you meant by this comment And where do you think the wireless comes from in most cases? well it doesnt come from telecom if thats what you were meaning. so therefore theyre not handicapped on the services/speeds they can provide to the customer. Cheers Term X |

Cheers Term X But it does come from Telecom as they have the cable that links us. There may be some other company supplying internet to New Zealand via Satelite but that means lag big time due to signal transmission time. That is why Telecom have such a monopoly on the country. |

Did you mean that big southern cross cable linking us to the world? Im not actually sure if Telecom actually owns that totally at all. Term X  |

| 439397 | 2006-03-22 08:13:00 | You are right Telecom dont own the southern cross cable im sure they think they do but they only rent the access to it that cable was put their as a if you like lifeline for this part of the world to provide highspeed internet to all, well very low speed thanks to the farsical telecom. | Hitech (9024) | ||
| 439398 | 2006-03-22 08:28:00 | They know they own enough :-) It's probably more important who is prepared to buy capacity. "Southern Cross is an independent entity and is owned by Telecom New Zealand (50%), Optus (40%) and MCI (10%)" |

Who's your ISP? k indeed :p ISP is X-net, but Im also running them at my home & it's mint, the same test at mine see's a much different result: KiwiMR2 1mb ( . photobucket . com/albums/v57/KiwiMR2/KiwiMR2speed . jpg" target="_blank">img . photobucket . com) ouch Kiwimr2 thats pretty poor alright, maybe its the actual line under the house as opposed to anything inside? eg, modem, pc etc is fine but old wiring under the house? any other pc's you could try, maybe someone's laptop etc? I wondered about that, who's responsibilty is under the house to the road?? ours or Telecoms?? I have set up a laptop on wireless in the house and that suffers from the same slow speed . I spoke to X-net today & they said to check the usual, virus, spyware, pc speed, un-plug all phones to see if any faulty line filters etc . I'll have to call them when im in front of the pc tomorrow evening and see if they can do anything else to check the cause . Cheers KiwiMR2 |

You don't need to do speed tests to web sites or worry about anything like viruses etc . Your router isn't synching properly for all the downstream frequencies . ADSL works with multiple 4k bands, you aren't getting enough of them one way . You get 160K for upstream which is correct for 128K, you should get 360k for downstream not 64K . The upstream frequencies are between the voice band and the downstream band . It looks like there is something killing high freqs . |
