2006-03-21 08:39:00 | SLI is a gimick! Unless u intent to run dual 30' LCD's chances are you'll become CPU limited long before you push 2x7900's to their limit. Kinda irrelevant seeing as your not looking at 2x7900 but still such a gimick! In the majority of cases 1x7900 should offer superior performance when compared to 2x6800, not to mention you dont need such an expensive motherboard, and chenobyl for a PSU. SLI is only for the stupidly rich and offers no tangiable benefits to mear mortals. | Pete O'Neil (6584) | |
2006-03-21 10:03:00 | I'm pleased to see that the general conscensus seems to favour one card. So will get a 7900. Thanks for the opinions.

2006-03-21 10:34:00 | Errr, i dont agree at all... SLI/Crossfire is certainly NOT a gimmick, however is for the elite gamers with 16x12 or widescreen monitor who play online with all AA/AF or AA-HDR enabled. Online games frame rates do drop on busy servers where alot of action is going on. 30% increase is usually the min, generally 50-60% is the increase. Game will always get more graphicly intenstive than not along with falling monitor prices. If however you cant see monitor upgrades or have a 20" monitor at present then yes it is hard to justify at present. Both the G71 Geforce or R580 Radeon single gpu solution would be able for 12x10 game play.

2006-03-21 10:47:00 | Funny that, The net is saturated in people reporting no or minimal increase after installing the second card, and even in benchmarking the optimal performance increase I have seen has been 30 percent. | Metla (12) | |

2006-03-21 11:06:00 | Just had a quick squizz at the benchmarks, looks like a 20 to 30 fps increase on each system, when running at a very high res, and on a game that has full driver and dev support. Nothing like a 50 percent increase, and it just points out that 1 high end current generation card is far better bang for buck then 2 last generation cards in SLI....as per the original question. SLI=Gimmick.

2006-03-21 11:24:00 | 7900GT 1280x960 4xaa 64>90=40% 1600x1200 4xaa 49>82=67% 1920x1440 4xaa 35>64=82% 2048x1536 4xaa 32>58=81% Unless i'm reading wrong?, big diff in those frame when you what smooth game play on LCD's like Dell 2005/2405 So, not a gimmick IMHO next generation cards will always complete with SLI of previous generation.

2006-03-21 22:14:00 | next generation cards will always complete with SLI of previous generation. Thats the precise reason SLI is a gimick! A friend of mine just brought a SLI board with a 6600GT and initially intended to buy another 6600GT and use SLI. Nvidia just announced the 7600GT, which is at the same pricepoint as the 6600GT, hes better off having a single 7600GT than 2 6600GTs. Buy one card, and then in six months time when u notice games are running slower, you can replace it with another card that offers the same performance as your previous card in SLI.

2006-03-21 23:25:00 | Single card, go for it. X1900 vs 7900 ? I don't know. I only recommended the nvidia because that is what I am more familiar with. IIRC the X1900xtx is the most powerful? What do you do to use so much graphics power?

I see where you are coming from Pete, SLI is not for the average gamer but like I said the elitest, those who have big moniotrs, play online mostly . I am sure they dont think SLI is a gimmick . How do you think these guys are so fast & acurate running around big player maps in 1st person shooters? |
