439609 2006-03-21 03:49:00 How do I change the normal.dot file so that all new documents automatically include a footer with the path and filename? bpt2 (6653)
439610 2006-03-21 04:47:00 You can edit the normal.dot default document template for Microsoft Word by going to the file, which is normally located at: (Start > Run)

Windows XP, 2000
%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates

Look for a file called normal.dot, make sure it's NOT read-only and begin editing it. Make sure you make it read-only after you've finished editing.

I'm not sure about the path on Windows 98 and ME, but it's something like C:\Windows\Profiles\<user name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

439611 2006-03-21 04:53:00 Realised I forgot the bit about inserting the footer onto the normal.dot template.

When you are editing the template, go
View > Header and Footer

Two boxes, which are dotted-bordered will appear, one at the top and one at the bottom.

Scroll down to the bottom box and click on it to insert text, then go Insert > Autotext > Filename and path.

Save and close the normal.dot file and remember to make it read-only after editing.

439612 2006-03-21 04:54:00 Hi bpt2
If this was to be a regular need, then it is possible to modify the blank template (Normal . dot) so that it always appears . However, modifying the Normal . dot would cause the footer information to appear by default in every document, including some where you may not wish it, such as in sheets of labels . I recommend that you prepare a second template which reflects the default setting of the standard Normal . dot, and contains the addition detail required to place the file details in the footer .

To Insert the information . . . . .
Click View > Header and Footer and select the Footer .
Click on Insert > AutoText > Filename and Path (or just Filename) .
Save and close the new template, giving it a new name .

The next document you create using this template, using File > New > Templates > On my Computer and clicking on the new template name, will automatically create the appropriate details in the Footer .
