439554 2006-03-20 22:32:00 Network stuff – grrrr – have never known too much about it and don’t really think want or need to at my advanced stage of life!
Anyway small home LAN – XP on both PC’s and now for some reason cannot transfer files between the two. Have changed nothing.
Disconnected Zone Alarm and the internet is working fine on both.
Help please!
Many thanks

439555 2006-03-20 22:45:00 I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you've turned off your only firewall and you've connected to the Internet you've probably picked up a bunch of worms and viruses (viri?).

"Jacques wanted to show me just how risky it is to connect an unprotected PC to the 'net. We set up a poor Windows XP machine with no firewall or anti-virus software - connecting it to the Internet would be like throwing it into a lion pen with raw meat strapped to its hard drive. How long would it be before we were hit by something nasty on the net? Hours, minutes? As it turned out - eight seconds! "

439556 2006-03-20 23:27:00 Thanks – will go and stand in the corner! Have no viruses – just turned off the firewall to if it was that causing the problem. stuffed (1469)
439557 2006-03-20 23:55:00 Need more specifics before I can help.

When did you notice the PC no longer shared files?
Did anything change?
Are you using any kind of Internet sharing, and does it work?

You may want to post the following from *both* PC's

Start... Run... Cmd

ipconfig /all>c:\ipconfig.txt
net use>c:\use.txt
net share>c:\share.txt

notepad c:\ipconfig.txt
Select all
Edit...copy
in your post, Edit...paste
File...Exit

notepad c:\use.txt
Select all
Edit...copy
in your post, Edit...paste
File...Exit

notepad c:\share.txt
Select all
Edit...copy
in your post, Edit...paste
File...Exit

439558 2006-03-21 00:12:00 Appreciate your help – did not notice any changes and yes both PC’s use the internet and that is working well.
Think may have found the culprit! Have a weather station on one PC and as well as uploading to the internet is loading to the other PC. Have turned that LAN connection off and all looks normal again – for some reason!
Many thanks
