439365 2006-03-20 09:23:00 quick question...someone I know foolishly bought and installed an xp home upgrade version over the top of their win98

now they've got multiple problems which seem to be multiplying lol

question is: can I do a clean install using the upgrade cd ?. Its just oen of those things I havent tried lol. Perhaps I'll need the 98 cd on hand to 'convince' the xp upgrade cd that Its all kosher ? or what ? or not ?

439366 2006-03-20 09:36:00 Haven't tried it myself, but apparently you can do a clean installation using an upgrade XP CD. The installer will ask for the qualifying CD (Win98) to be inserted at some stage to check it. Jen (38)

439368 2006-03-20 09:39:00 HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean yes you may. Don't forget to slipstream the drivers first!

The installer will ask for the qualifying CD (Win98) to be inserted at some stage to check it. It looks for a single file (some absurd name I can't remember) on the Windows 98 CD.

I must try and video record the file name the next time I reinstall XP.

439369 2006-03-20 11:11:00 From what I can gather, an upgrade disc is much the same as a full disc, just that it requires a full version disc in the early stages of the install (Im guessing MS deliberately left out one or 2 vital files).
Anyway, I have done clean installs with the upgrade disc quite a few times, you just need the full install disc (in this case 98SE) when the install asks for it.

439371 2006-03-20 12:00:00 Or, if you have an existing 98/ME/XP installation already on the hard drive you can start the installation process, then format and install XP and you won't be asked for a qualifying CD
If you format first, then run the XP upgrade CD, you will be asked for the qualifying CD

439372 2006-03-20 12:17:00 oh the 'qualifiying cd' is nto a problem........ drcspy (146)
439373 2006-03-20 17:42:00 BDH's suggestion is the way to go. He wasn't suggesting you don't have the qualifying opsys - just that it's a simpler method. I've only done it once, but that's what I successfully did. Greg (193)
