440120 2006-03-23 06:29:00 Greetings all!

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1800 laptop. Was working fine(apart from a few lines of dead pixels), last month I took the keyboard off to clean the fan and the rest of it and since then it has been crashing at random times. At first it wouldn't start but once I managed to fix that it was fine. Then it started this crashing at random times. Nothing seems to be triggering it. I thought that it was due to overheating so purchased heat gel, but no luck. A possible solution was presented tome in uninstalling Norton Antivirus, no luck, then I uninstalled Zone Alarm proand was ok for about three days. Then it happend more often that I would care. But for the past few days it has been fine. But it's started crashing again.

I hae an external HDD attached to it and after crashing on some occasions it would say that the external HDD wasn't responting so I restart the laptop again and it's fine.

I thought I'd try re-install Windows XP Pro on it and all was going well untill it started scanning the internal HDD for space and whatever else for, then suddenly an error appeared that the Byte xxxxx(didn't get a chance to read the number) was corrupt and then it restarted. Stillc an't install windows XP and when in Windows, it still crashes. Hae run Scandisk but no errors found.

Laptop specs
Toshiba Satellite 1800
age: 3 years
RAM: 256mb
HDD: 20gb
CPU: 1ghz
Opperating System: Windows XP Pro

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

If you are unable to successfully format/scan the drive during install I would image you have hardware issue, perhaps accelerated by your removal of the keyboard. How did you clean. The proper method is to use an 'Air Duster", u could have bunped/trapped dust anywhere, un-sitted a ribbon, dusting etc.
I would check connections again with keyboard off (may as well now), get an air duster to blow dust through and out of case. Reconnect, try install again, if still failing you may need to contemplate the value of getting a replacement drive/ repair of issue, against newer equipment, though I find Toshiba Laptops very reliable and have the 2800 myself.

440123 2006-03-24 06:09:00 Thanks SolMiester. Will try that tonight and will get an air duster this weekend.

I have checked all the connection but to no avail. I thought that the hard drive might be on the way out.

Anyway, will try what you suggested and get back to you.
