440064 2006-03-23 02:54:00 My cousin gave me her laptop to have a look at because it was going slow & the sound is kinda screwed up. I ran a hijackthis scan & I couldn't see any malware in there.

440065 2006-03-23 04:08:00 Thats fine.No malware there... Pancake (6359)
440066 2006-03-23 04:27:00 And all that is loaded on a 128 or 256 MB machine?

It's slow? What a surprise. ;)
Graham L (2)
440067 2006-03-23 04:34:00 its got 512mb I think. anyway, the sound problem seems to be because the computer can't handle the load, but I don't see why. It is a 1.7ghz laptop that says it has 504mb of RAM (I don't know whats going on there)

I've put up a screenshot of the processes list showing how much memory everything is using. www.imagef1.net.nz

She seems to be running SQL server. thats strange
Greven (91)
440068 2006-03-23 04:44:00 So it's quite a nice laptop.

It will be giving 8MB of system RAM to the video interface. She's obviouly not into graphics-heavy games. ;)

From that process list, can you pick what's using most CPU? Is the disk being very busy all the time?

440069 2006-03-23 04:49:00 There is an entry that needs removing

440070 2006-03-23 04:53:00 But that's hardly going to slow the computer down. :D Graham L (2)
440071 2006-03-23 05:09:00 There is no hard drive activity while the computer is idle, but whenever you open any program, the hard drive grinds away & it is really slow.

It takes ages to boot up too.
Greven (91)
440072 2006-03-23 05:10:00 msconfig ~ Startup ~ turn off everything apart from the virus protection.

System Properties ~ Advanced ~ Visual Effects ~ Adjust for best performance, then if you like the XP look switch on the last 3 in the list.

440073 2006-03-23 05:19:00 You are probably using a lot of disk in the swap file . Thus you need to swap stuff in and out to run anything . Even so, it should run . Most of that lot looks to be part of what's provided by Sony to make it an entertainment machine, so it should be able to handle it .

Perhaps the swap file is badly fragmented . That might be a slowing factor . Disk transfers should not be a heavy time user these days . But lots of seeks between accesses can rapidly make things slow .

There is a (MS) programme (BootVis . exe) which shows what is taking the time in the boot process . MS say that XP does all the optimisations that the programme can suggest, so they don't provide it for download any more . But it can still be found . ;)
