439998 2006-03-22 22:25:00 Hi,
Re my previous enquiry regarding CPU speed ! and poor Google Earth results
I have spent the last week or so looking for a second hand, but faster computer to replace my 7 year old one which has a 500 MHz CPU, 500mb ram,and a total of 18.3 gb of hardrives. using XP Pro- with no success
I would have installed my 2002 XP Pro and would install it in a tower and use my present monitor, etc, even if I had to go back to pick up the updates,( which could be downloaded using a son's Broadband facility. but there is nothing in Trade Me or Trade & Exchange etc- at best I get offered 1.6 MHz, on SD ram and no cd rewriter which I need anyway.- and no guarantee of reputable equipment.
Now it has been suggested that a new- much better graphics card might make my present computer and it's slowness become acceptable - even if slower than modern equipment.
Can anybody say yea or nay as to the value of so doing?
OR, offer me a good computer at a reasonable price ;)

If you son lives nearby why don't you take your computer around to his place (just the "box" part) and hook up with his broadband to see if Google Earth then works better than it does on dialup?

<crafty idea> Or maybe visit your son a little more often and use his computer to play with Google Earth for an hour or so each time. ;) </crafty idea>

Personally, after half an hour's "wandering around the world" I got bored with it and uninstalled the program. :p

Just a couple of ideas that might save you a few dollars in the long run. :)

440000 2006-03-22 22:52:00 Hi Susan,
Ha !!! son is a successfull architect with his firm having their own domain- imagine me going there - yes handy- with 16 architects glaring at me?- (or laughing) :nerd:
and as I am in my dotage I would NOT go "play" anyway.
seriously I know a 58 k modem works with Google Earth as per smithie38 private comments- and I agree that after a time I would get bored "playing " with it, etc- the problem I have is an ambition to upgrade everything especially as to speed -I play a lot of chess online- but it is a matter of sensible spending when all said and done my "old" pooter is working well ( though my hardrives make rude noises sometimes, and could blow at any time)
If this grahics question is of any value- this site is where I could get an answer-
keep replies a'comin folks
:)

440001 2006-03-22 23:24:00 Greg <------ has a suggestion... buy my Pentium 4 2.4 Mhz system for 500 bucks, else get some more RAM for the cheapest upgrade option. Greg (193)

2.4 Megahertz? now that's just insulting :p

Will the onboard video be sufficient to run Google Earth smoothly?

440003 2006-03-22 23:52:00 Hi Greven and Gregg,
Gregg---I have just registered on your site your offer is very interesting - but I need to chat to you
Greven ,
I have no doubt that your crack is facetious, but there are some offers in a very similar range -but I genuinely want to update my steam driven pooter within financial limits, so anything is worth a try

I was just poking fun at the fact that Greg said Mhz when he meant Ghz. If he meant what he said, you would be "upgrading" from a 500Mhz machine to a 2.4Mhz machine :p

440005 2006-03-23 02:52:00 About half an original IBM PC. They were 4.57 MHz. The Apple 2 was 2MHz. Graham L (2)
440006 2006-03-23 03:50:00 You will most likely not be able to find a much better video card for a vintage 500MHz machine anyway.

Pity you don't live in Wellington, at Turners Auctions this morning you could have bought a 1GHz Compaq Evo with 2 year old HP/Compaq 17" monitor for around $100, or a Compaq Evo with 1.7GHz Celeron 20GB HDD, 256MB RAM, and 17" monitor for about $200.

2 year old HP 7500 17" monitors went for $20, but that was only because I pushed the price up so the dealers wouldn't have it all their own way :)

EDIT: What betting Trade Me will be flooded with those machines over the next week or two, IRD will be watching
