Others may frown over this advice, but perhaps try and give it a couple of semi-gentle taps (while turned off) and see if that gets it to run. If it does, backup your data pronto!! I've also heard some people suggest putting a failing drive into the freezer for a while, and then let it get back to room temperature. Apparently the expansion and contraction can help free a stuck component. I hope someone else can comment on these two suggestions. |

Maxtor (www.maxtor.com oads%2FAll%20Downloads&downloadID=22) Seagate (www.seagate.com) Western Digital (support.wdc.com) Just checking some old drives on my desk at the moment. Ticking is not good (i.e. dying - grab your data any way you can) |

| 441053 | 2006-03-27 09:32:00 | There are always recovery companies but I'd suggest a seat and a drink before looking at the prices. Backup Backup Backup I don't think it can be mentioned often enough. If you want to keep it back it up, the hard drive in your computer is more likely to break than the other bits, after all it spends its life spinning at high speed (5400RPM, 7200RPM, 10000RPM or higher for expensive SCSI drives). |

| 441054 | 2006-03-27 09:57:00 | Well if it is broken (try in another PC - if it still isn't seen in the bios then, yep pretty much conclusive) and you want a pro company to recover the data, then stop using it now. Greg's suggestions are worth a go (though not if you are going down the Pro i.e. big $$$ route). I've also tried swapping the controller board's in a drive but no go in the past. For drives that are obviously failing but not fully dead (the ticking noise is a real bad sign of final death), then I've used Knoppix to recover data...... |

| 441055 | 2006-03-27 10:18:00 | you might have jumped to conclusions a bit here. you said you couldn't entre the bios.....that often means some other fault like cpu/ram or very simply an upset bios. try reseting the bios and checking that it id's the hardrive ok. i've had a few that will do this when the bios battery starts going flat. | tweak'e (69) | ||
| 441056 | 2006-03-27 20:58:00 | Sorry.... Yesterday i had had dental work done and was a tad negative. Oops I would take the HDD out, place it in a working computer, and back everything on it IF you can get it working at all. If it works perfectly, still back up everything, it's part of life is that HDDs can and will fail. Its not a mater of if, but when... I say back everything because too much time is wasted selecting just the important bits, however, on a 200GB HDD, you may want to be selective :D If the HDD is behaving well, then you will have to consider suggestions such as tweak'e s check the bios battery, as something will require fixing before you have a well behaved toy again. |

| 441057 | 2006-03-31 20:51:00 | So how did it go? Dead as a dead thing? Back to life? Data recovered? Cremated or buried? |

Sorry, that's just how it is. :( *Smooch* she's dead - buy a new one :'( You can put the hard drive in as secondary, and try to get some of the data off of it that way...happened to me about 3 months ago... |
