440721 2006-03-28 02:50:00 1) Try a different slot for the RAM modules.
2) Load BIOS defaults, you could have a dodgy setting.
3) Check motherboard manufacture web site for the BIOS update which may resolve stablilty issue

ok, ill try different combinations of ram/slots.

However, could somebody talk me through the BIOS setting bit, as I havent a clue what to do in regards to this.

Also, what do i click on to find out the model of my motherboard?I know its an ASRock, but theres loads of diff models on the website.

440723 2006-03-28 03:21:00 If you dont know BIOS settings, then once BIOS loaded just load the default settings. If you flash the BIOS, this needs to be done anyway.

Have you told us the Motherboard manufacturer yet, CPU type etc, this would help

440724 2006-03-28 03:23:00 ok...shock horror, its crashed again! Playing a game that isnt graphically demanding, its crashing back to the desktop. Its doing this with both RAM sticks individually fitted - which surey means its not a RAM problem? Havent got a clue what to do then!

On the contrary it is still probably a Memory/MainBoard/Game compatibility problem. Some module's just do not get on with certain setup's..I see your thinking of some Corsair, that may be better than the current stick's.Problem is you never know until you put it in..may just end up being the same as before and a total waste of Lolly. What's needed is a try before you buy system with Memory,so many variable's that I think it's the way to go..pity more seller's don't provide the service as it's a winner for the customer satisfaction guaranteed factor.

Model: AMD Athlon XP 2800+
Motherboard: ASRock K7S8X

Noticed also that whilst i was looking at the system summary it says "disabled host controllers are present. check BIOS settings"...Dont know if this is any help.

Also, not too sure what "flashing" the BIOS means? :illogical

Thanks

440726 2006-03-28 03:45:00 If they are different sticks, probably have different timings. Or both sticks work okay by themselves, you could try different slots. Is it an AMD dual channel system?. With my motherboard, I had to swap slots in order to get stability even with a paired dual channel 1Gb kit.
Before he gets confused, that only matters if he is trying to run them as DUAL. My son has had 2 different rams for 2 years and does not have a problem with them, but his MB does not support Dual channel.

There is the possibility that it could be the MB too.....
Get one new piece of ram, not second hand and try it.

That may be true but with Memory their is no standard way of doing thing's.What works for one won't work for another and viceversa..best to play about and try all option's.No offence meant.

440728 2006-03-28 10:28:00 ive also noticed that occassionally when the game crashes, it simply crashes back to the desktop, without any error message, but other times it displays a message which says "the application has encountered a serious problem and needs to close". I dont know if this is related or whatever, but whe i instal iTunes for my iPod, i cant actually get it to work - as when i click on the icon it just comes up with the send error report thing.

I did re-install windows xp shortly after the installation of the RAM and graphics card - with a copy my friend gave me, which included service packs 1 + 2.

440729 2006-03-30 04:12:00 anybody have any further ideas on the problem? fent (9751)
440730 2006-03-30 04:39:00 Just noticed that this board is a Hybrid design for upgrade paths to different CPU's etc.

1)- If I were you, I would get out the motherboard manual and go to the web site to download the latest BIOS. Unstablilty may have been resolved with better firmware.
2)- I would check to see if they have any FAQ's or a forum with reference to the issue.
3)- Downloaded the latest chipset drivers.
