| 440960 | 2006-03-29 02:24:00 | I heard a nasty rumour that NT was based on OS/2. Is that correct? No, OS/2 is a good operating system. ;) It was going to be the operating system provided by MS and IBM as a cooperative thing. But MS taught IBM how much to trust a "partner" by releasing their own GUI based OS "Windows" before OS/2 was finished. (Of course, Windows wasn't finished either, but by version 3.00 it was almost usable.) NT is said to be based on VAX/VMS, the mature DEC OS for the VAX midi computer range. MS headhunted the Dave Cutler ( en.wikipedia.org) from DEC. For a while he made noises about NT which was to be a real OS, with real security. Then he learned about MS and its ideas aboiut secure operating systems. gg (google.co.nz) |
