Oh and just because you can't see one doesn't mean it ain't scratched.

442107 2006-03-31 09:24:00 Wonder if this is a DRM problem? zqwerty (97)
442108 2006-03-31 09:52:00 Unlikely - DRM kicks in when you try to play something, I've not seen it when just copying files. gcarmich (10068)
442109 2006-03-31 10:50:00 Try mounting the DVD on a virtual drive maybe. zqwerty (97)

invalid MS-Dos Function
I have seen this problem dozens of times. I have recieved (mainly CD's with large video files) from multiple people with different CD writers that have the same issue on my PC. I have written CD's that others have had problems with on there PC's "invalid-dos function".
My PC has been upgraded (replaced) at least twice in 3 years since Ive seen this issue. This is not a hardware issue, its simply impossible and I will stake my life on it.

1. Many of the problems CD's will still play there AVI's etc completly fine 100% if played DIRECTLY off the CD. If you try to copy the CD or dump the files onto the HDD then you get read errors "Invalid Dos Funtion". The odd CD with the issue won't.
2. Yep Never seen the Problem on my current or Old DVD writer, its a CD writeing issue. For the record Ive owned LG and Pioneer CD writers, friends have also had BTC (real crap) and sony writers etc so its not a brand issue.
3. I have read it may be related to over-burning and the way XP/NT handles the larger size CD. This seems to be the most logical explantion, however doesn't really help knowing this as most of my "backups" require a slight overburn.
4. This has nothing to do with SP2, the problems been around a lot longer (a lot).
5. I have read Win98 or Linux don't have this problem, unconfirmed.
6. There has been some suggestion its a media quaility issue, however I hav seen this occure on multiple media type including supposive quaility name brands.

Small workaround.
I have saved probably 3/5 CD's by using Nero to copy the entire CD to an image file (can take a long time near the end). Then used ISOBuster to extract the files out of the image back onto the desktop etc. I now avoid writing large AVI files to CD's and use DVD's.

Workaround

You're going to need a Win9x machine to do this. Essentially you'll need to boot into win98 to copy the file, or if you absolutely must have it on your XP machine, put it into a container such as a zip file. If you just want to use DOS to do this, you can get pkzip from just about anywhere on the internet.

I extracted some of the salient points from the link above.

442113 2006-03-31 16:06:00 Summary: Try the operation on a Windows 98 machine instead, the Nero image/isobuster
solution is a possibility as well.
