| 441985 | 2006-03-30 06:48:00 | I have just experienced failed system restores on 2 different computers: each time the machines rebooted after the restorations, Windows failed to load, with the message (paraphrased): "Windows could not start because the file c:\windows\system32\config\system was corrupted or not present" Each time there seemed to be no option but to wipe the Windows partition and reinstall. This has worked, but I am feeling nervous about using system restore again, although I have used it many times in the past. System configurations: 1. Self-built desktop, Foxconn 865A01-PE-6LS mobo; 2.8MHz P4; 1GB DDR RAM; 120GB Seagate HD; Win XP Pro (SP2); networked via cable link to Linksys WRT54G broadband router. 2. Asus L4R laptop; 512MB RAM; 40GB HD; Win XP Pro (SP2); networked via Linksys WPC54G wireless adapter to same router. Both systems were up to date with Windows updates & anti-virus checks, and seemed to be healthy enough in that regard. On both occasions I was tinkering with the network setup parameters (and stuffing them up!), hence the need to use system restore. Does anyone have an idea why lightning struck twice this way (about two weeks apart)? No doubt I did something idiotic, but I don't know what it was!!! Any suggestions gratefully received. |

(Changing the bootdisk, in the BIOS, to the hdd), after you've done a clean install? Thanks, I wasn't aware of that link. It might have saved me some hassle if I had looked at it first. I am still puzzled how I got hit by this twice on different systems. Saddam's revenge, perhaps.... If I understand your question correctly, yes, in the case of the Asus notebook I re-installed from the recovery partition on the HDD. For the desktop I re-installed from the original CD (with SP2). Now the agony is over (I hope), at least I have two clean installs once again. Thanks again for your reply. |
