442478 2006-03-31 09:35:00 Its time to replace my old pc. I'm a bit outof touch with where things are at, hardware wise. My needs are not for the most grunt, and gaming is not an issue. I'm looking for a reasonable spec with upgrade potential.

One system I'm looking at has a sempron 3000+ socket 754, MSI K8N mobo and Radeon X550 256MB PCIe graphics. Are those components any good? If not, what should I look to upgrade to?

442479 2006-03-31 11:00:00 1 . What do you use your computer for?

2 . How much money have you got to spend on a new computer?

3 . What are you going to use from your older computer?
(keyboard,mouse,monitor etc . . . )

You could just get a upgrade box .

Something like a 3200 939,1 gig of ddr400,6600gt pci e . (pretty cheap really)Has more upgrade then a 754 system .

442480 2006-03-31 11:04:00 Use is mostly Office & similar apps, accounting, photo editing / movie making and web browsing.

Budget is $1600 - $1800. Don't plan on using much from the old pc. Maybe a hard drive. Will keep it for the kids.

So what applications do you use for photo editing and movie making? These applications can be a little graphic intensive.

So you need a whole new computer including moniter possibly. I take it that you have more than one physical hard drive in your case at the moment?

442484 2006-04-01 05:07:00 DONT buy a 754 system, old outdated technology, also very very few 754 motherboards have PCI-e. AMD is about to release a new socket AM2 in a couple of months, so if your upgrade isnt crucial it might be an idea to wait until then. A 6600GT is way overkill for someone who isnt going to game, if you into video editing consider a X1300 as they have hardware support for video compression. A midrange socket 939 CPU, 1gig of ram and a X1300 would be a nice system that would suit your needs. Pete O'Neil (6584)

442486 2006-04-01 10:19:00 Soooooo I've got a Gigabyte GA-K8VT890-9 motherboard, Athlon 64 3200+ CPU and Gigabyte GV-RX13P256D-RH video card.

Will that all play nicely together?

442487 2006-04-01 12:20:00 Not sure about the video card, but the rest is pretty much the same as mine (Asus K8 and Athlon 64). I do a lot of graphics and some video/moviemaker stuff and it works a treat. If you can make sure you get 1gig of ram as it makes a heck of a difference with Win XP Shortcircuit (1666)
