1400673 2015-05-14 01:06:00 Back in this thread pressf1.pcworld.co.nz I got some router advice.
My old setup has been rock solid ever since though so I never ended up buying anything.

Last night I lost internet in only the 3rd time in almost 2 years which is pretty good but it refused to come back until I reset the free spark router to it's defaults which has mucked up my setup again and I'll be trying to sort it out tonight. so I'm considering replacing the router again.

Looking at these based on previous thread;
www.pbtech.co.nz
www.pbtech.co.nz

What I want is an all-in one that I can use on VDSL now and on Fibre later that is rock solid and has good Wi-Fi
Any updates on the two above ?

Reading a recent test on toms hardware shows me that 3 aerial routers perform better and shows how much better wireless ac is so that's got me wondering also. www.tomshardware.com

This one has all the features I want but is very expensive
www.pbtech.co.nz
any thoughts?

And finally this one has everything but wireless ac and a much more palatable price
www.pbtech.co.nz

Anyone care to offer some advice on which to get ?

1400674 2015-05-14 05:56:00 What about the Netcomm NF8AC. Alex B (15479)
1400675 2015-05-14 11:17:00 I've even found the Netcomm ones like the NF4V aren't 100% reliable, but they're "good enough" for most people and significantly better than the freebies.
I would *still* recommend a DV130 + a Gargoyle router. You can't beat it for reliability or performance. I just restarted mine after 240 days uptime because I accidentally saved two windows changing conflicting things at once to the router... Fail me... Restart brought it back straight away though :)
Still, how many others here can say they can beat a 240 day router uptime? Solid the whole way through!!

1400677 2015-05-14 23:01:00 Well before this fiasco this week my last issues were august last year so the uptime on the freebie is better than expected. It did "only" have 90 days uptime in the stats though. I think the biggest issue with my setup is that when it drops it's very difficult to get it working again or see where the problem is.

Having the technicolor in bridge mode seems to not want to work any more but because it never has an internet light in that condition it's hard to know which router is causing the problem. DSL stays up but the internet drops. Since wednesday night the only way I can get the net to work is to use the techniclor back in it's default setup. I also had to set the DNS manually because this router and windows 8.1 have that issue that never effected me in bridge mode but does now.

I may look into that setup Chill, Which router are you recommending for gargoyle these days?

Also if anyone can tell me what is required when you go to fibre, I don't want to waste money now on something I won't use after that arrives next year. I assume you need some kind of router connected to the ONT? and if I go the gargoyle route it'll be the DV130 that becomes redundant?

1400678 2015-05-15 00:36:00 Yep, the modem would be redundant with UFB. Note that many ISPs require your router to be able to VLAN tag the WAN port. Bigpipe doesn't tag by default so pretty much any router can be used with them but you would obviously need it fast enough! So, you need to check your ISP's requirements. linw (53)
1400679 2015-05-15 04:27:00 Yeah I don't require VLAN 10 for my customers either. The WDR4300 is good, 5Ghz WiFi, uber fast, also supports VLANs if you need... That or if you're on the cheap go for the TL-WR1043ND v2 still :) Chilling_Silence (9)
1400680 2015-05-15 05:22:00 Well thanks for all the advice, I considered it all. Decided on a DV130 & WR1043ND for around $220 then changed my mind again. I decided I want an all in one that just works as is and went back to debating between the Netcomm NF4V & the TP-Link TD-W9980. Ignoring all your wisdom I went with the TP-Link :) time will tell if I regret that choice. Thing is it has the best mix of features and price and does everything my old 2 devices did in one unit. Setup frustrated me a bit but it's up and running after some swearing and now we just have to see how it performs over time.

In an Ideal world I'd have some sort of comms cupboard in the centre of my house where I could mount all the network hardware out of sight. As it is though the router sits on my computer desk and with 2 routers and a switch and a network printer, etc, etc it was all getting a bit out of control. I'm using 2 5 port switches at home and I'm struggling to figure how I need that many ports so tonight I might see if I can remove anything.
