1400420 2015-05-10 21:13:00 I was/am using MSSE and it was working fine as far as I could tell.
However lately it does not seem to be doing as good a job.

I run a trendmicro web based scan once every few months to see if my virus scanner is leaving any behind and it seems that it is.
This means, like all free anti-virus its died a natural death and it is time to move on.

Any suggestions what to replace it with, honestly I am seriously considering just going for Nod32 and being done with it.
But if there are any decent free ones out there please advise.

1400421 2015-05-10 21:17:00 I finally went with Nod32 two years ago best thing I ever did. Its helped me fix 3 family laptops so far by using it to scan and get rid of unwanted stuff. gary67 (56)
1400422 2015-05-10 21:17:00 Bitdefender doing free 6 months deal again if you want more time to decide.

I can also do a 3 month trial of NOD32 if you want, send me a PM if interested.

1400423 2015-05-11 00:15:00 MS stopped trying to keep up with MSSE and relegated it to a baseline bare minimum better than nothing type of anti-virus so that current versions of windows at least have something by default (and renamed it to defender on windows 8 just to confuse us). It still works ok but you can't depend on it by itself.

I use Defender + MBAM + Esset free online scanner myself to keep things free. So far so good but I have often considered moving to NOD32 instead. Last I checked MSSE had a detection rate in the 80-90% range but 10-20% of malware & viruses is a lot still.

A lot of the free tools try to convince you to pay by making the free option harder to find and/or making you register yearly to get another shot at you. For example a couple of friends I installed MBAM for in the past have stopped using it after the trial expired convinced they had to pay to keep it working due to the wording of the renewal message and the layout of the website. I no longer enable the full trial and set it up as the free version from the start for this reason.

On the free side Avast is a bit better but comes bundled with stuff you need to watch out for when installing (might just be chrome I forget). It's still not as good as the best but as good as any free offering as far as I know.

1400424 2015-05-11 00:35:00 What gary67 said.
It's one of the few things I have zero issues in paying for. It's worth it.
If it picks up something and it saves me having to format once every 12-24 months, in terms of my time, it's more than paid for itself.

For ease-of-mind too, that's invaluable.

Best part is it's *great* for gamers, and you'll find it knows not to kick in while you're gaming, like MSSE was NOTORIOUS for doing.

1400425 2015-05-11 01:05:00 There are some really good free antivirus programmes around AVG and Avast spring to mind.If you are going to pay check around as to which one suits you and your pocket best. Here is a link I found,I do not vouch for its impartiality but it may help you choose one.Good luck.

I don't think "really good" and "AVG" belong in the same sentence :p

1400428 2015-05-12 03:00:00 I've taken to installing Qihu 360 Internet Security on a lot of machines as a free anti-virus option. It has been getting a lot of extremely favorable reviews in computer mags etc. lately. AVG and MSSE seem to have gone out of favour recently.
It surprises me to see that a lot of manufacturers & 'toaster shops' still bundle McAfee or Nortons with new machines running Windows 8.1 when the OS comes with Defender ( updated MSE, not the best but probably good enough for most home users and certainly better than nothing)

Its worse than that, the bundled Norton is only a demo version & stops working after 30days, leaving the customer with no working AV.
The manufacturers in question (cough cough HP etc) obviously dont give a rats arse about their customers security.
This in spite of HP publicly saying they were going to stop bundling trialware & crapware .
