1400257 2015-05-07 22:23:00 Recently, while I am typing on my computer it will completely freeze and will be completely unresponsive until I restart my computer. Occasionally, along with a freeze up, my screen will go completely black, but this only happens about 20% of the time.

My computer is an Acer Aspire V3-572g laptop which is faily new, less than a year old.

I am fairly certain that this is a keyboard issue because my computer will run fine with no hang ups until I try to type, where it will freeze.

This happens while I am in any program, Chrome, various games, Microsoft Word, etc. As well, I have gotten freezes while typing in my password to unlock my PC.

The strange part is that this does not happen consistently. Sometimes I can type paragraphs without it freezing, other times I will type 2 letters and it will freeze.

Here is what I have tried:
1. Ran an antivirus scan, virus free
2. Ran a malware scan, malware free
3. Re-installed keyboard drivers
4. ran sfc scan command
5.Checked for a failing hard drive, everything appears to be okay.
6. Checked to see if the problem was heat related, it wasn't.

I have read many threads of people that have had issues similar to mine, but no one that has had exactly my issue.

I am fearing that this is a hardware related issue because I have plugged in an external USB keyboard into my PC and it seems to have fixed the problem.
Another thing to note is that while playing games, I have not had problems while using keys to play the game, however trying to type in the games chat will cause my computer to again, freeze. I am wondering if there is anything left for me to try to fix the keyboard that is built into my PC?

1400258 2015-05-07 22:43:00 Since its less than a year old, get it fixed under warranty.

They have to replace the KB as it does sound like its failing, unless there's damage caused by a spillage (drinks spilt on KB) or some other physical damage which a warranty wont cover.

Sometimes the manufactures will say restore the computer back to factory defaults, so its like it was when you first brought it. This is to make sure its not a software related problem.

1400259 2015-05-07 23:14:00 Unfortunately, I had a drink spilled next to my computer. Liquid did not get on top of the computer or on the keyboard itself, but was spilled on the table and the liquid ran around/under the computer. Some liquid got in the vent that is on the left side of my laptop but it was not a lot and I cleaned it quickly. This happened 2-3 months before this problem began occurring. Also I haven't noticed any other problems that might be linked to that. (The fan that is in the same general area of my vent is still working.) Could this possibly be linked to the issue? katrinke1 (17364)
1400260 2015-05-08 00:04:00 It's all guesswork but it could be related to that spill. Liquid can leave residue than can cause corrosion or conduct small amounts of electricity either of which can cause weird faults and may not happen for some time. It could also be a red herring and it could still be software related. If water gets spilled on a PC you just need to remove all power sources and dry it out thoroughly but for other liquids they need to be cleaned off any circuitry to be sure no future issues will arise and this is not an easy thing to do. Try under warranty as Wainui suggests.

I've fixed 2 machines with liquid damage, one was a laptop with a faulty keyboard where several keys wouldn't function. Opening it up revealed what looked like a coffee stain on the underside of the keyboard, a new one from trademe for $30 fixed that just fine and youtube showed me how to replace it.

The other was a desktop the owners cat sprayed on the side intake fan while it was running. That was unpleasant and was fixed by removing the motherboard and hosing it down then drying it out - no risk as it was already dead and it resurrected just fine. The last issue on that one turned out to be a tiny amount of corrosion on the contacts of the RAM that I had to clean off a few days later. You couldn't pay me to do that repair, it only happened because it was a close friend who couldn't afford a new one.

1400261 2015-05-08 01:23:00 Thanks for the suggestions. I will try to get it fixed under warranty but I am fearful that they wont fix it because the liquid was coffee and that possibly could be the cause. I tried to soak up all that I could but I didn't take the casing off of the laptop to see if any got inside. katrinke1 (17364)

In which case it is an insurance claim.

1400263 2015-05-08 04:05:00 In which case it is an insurance claim.

What do you mean by that?
katrinke1 (17364)
1400264 2015-05-08 05:46:00 Don't think the person would have contents insurance !, but could be in part of the owners policy.

Accidental spillage. Watch the excess part of the contents policy tho.

Lurking.

1400265 2015-05-08 06:04:00 I know accidental spillage is not covered in the warranty but I'm not entirely sure the spill either is the source of my issues. katrinke1 (17364)
1400266 2015-05-08 10:03:00 Probably no help to your case, but I was having similar, but deeper problems.
My computer would freeze, sometimes reset/reboot. This was a heat related problem when cold.

At times it would even freeze during the BIOS routines at boot... which led me to suspect the motherboard.
On another couple of occasions some phantom characters appeared on the password screen at boot, again in the BIOS routine.

While I was still in some doubt about MOBO / RAM / CPU, at least this had ruled out software/malware issues.

Anyway, the bulk of the evidence started to point towards the motherboard and/or the BIOS chip on the motherboard.

Feeling the chip it was strangely warm, given that it does sod-all after boot. During power off I gave the chip a really good push. There was a small click, and it's worked perfectly since then, and without the chip getting hot.

Worth knowing for the other hacks and repairers out there. Saved myself $200 with a simple click.
