1399446 2015-04-28 01:05:00 There is a lot of different types of software out there . For me, when I see software code my eyes start spinning and my brain cell cowers in the corner of my skull . Except for wiki markup . Mmmm . Wiki markup . Mmmm . Editing Wikipedia . . .

Anyway, getting back to my problem (well, one of the many) I use software but I don't know how to modify software . I use Wordpress on my business site and for a club that I belong to . One place I work at uses Joomla . I use all sorts of plugins .

I want to engage someone to tweak or maintain some of the open source software that I use . I want a specialist so I don't have to pay for unnecessary training . So how can I find someone who is a specialist? (don't say google because that would always be my first option)

1399447 2015-04-28 01:41:00 Depends what you want done and if you're going to pay.

Asking is usually the best way but detail what you would like etc, how much you would like to spend etc. Give specifics as to the type of site/company. Any other things that may help a developer.

Freelancers are available and you just post your ad and choose someone, also asking at those specific software forums is a good idea.

If you looking for cheaper alternatives, local multimedia classes usually host a number of talented minds who may take that opportunity.

My plate too full to take on anything at this stage but there could be a few others here capable.

Cheers,

KK

1399448 2015-04-28 01:49:00 What it sounds like you are looking for is a freelance web developer as opposed to a software specialist. One place I would suggest looking would be the creative store who have a lot of freelance web guys and girls on their books. They are based in the Auckland CBD just off Nelson St in the refurbished council works depo. You can visit their website and check them out. Webdevguy (17166)

I am willing to pay although the work that I currently want done is for a part time company with a low profit margin!

I run Wordpress on my website at http://www.ecotechservices.co.nz
I now want to run the embedly Cards (see embed.ly) on a manual news aggregation page. I don't like the default settings and I want a little bit more functionality. I had a poke around the code but it was all a bit too much for me to figure out.

I think the work is worth up to $150 for me. Not sure if that would cover the work I want done.

1399450 2015-04-28 04:40:00 That would cover about 2-3 hours work depending on what the person charged. I'm pretty sure that most developers who are good with php could make the changes you want in about 20-30 minutes. Webdevguy (17166)

If you find anybody that is interested send them my way!
I tried to find that place in Auckland that you mentioned above but had no luck. Have you got a name or a link?

Cheers

1399452 2015-04-28 05:49:00 Could always mention your suggestion to the devs, it might be features worth handling. May not get added straight away but might eventually.

The thing with modifying the source means updating it could result in a broken site so I usually recommend a separate code page that only requires an include line to hopefully allow a least troublesome upgrade or if its allows plugins, this method would suit adding custom changes.

Low to not for profit sites, devs usually will work within your constraints, that's why explaining your company helps as I usually do community sites at no cost if its something I'm passionate about, just helps get your name around in the community which is a good trade off.

Cheers,

KK

The creative store www.thecreativestore.co.nz
www.google.com

Shed 5C, City Works Depot
90 Wellesley Street West
Auckland, 1010

Most of the guys I know are employed full time as web designers. You could definitely email louise@thecreativestore.co.nz

What is the additional functionality that you want to add?
Webdevguy (17166)
1399454 2015-04-28 08:22:00 Thanks for that extra info. I will definitely chase them up.

I have put an embedly card in this post: www.ecotechservices.co.nz
It works fine in this case but I have a separate application that needs more functionality and some cosmetic changes. I want to add date, author (already works on some URLs I think), and country in the top line. I want to a smaller image (when present). I want less padding. I want a smaller subject font. I want the text that is shown bunged in the page the card is in (works if you edit the text prior to saving).

Essentially I want something that looks like Google News or facebook URL sharing.

Adding the image and other cosmetic changes such as changing the font or making it smaller and having less padding is pretty straight forward with a bit of CSS.
