1400137 2015-05-06 20:30:00 Well this is an eye opener.

I had made a note of some adware removal programmes collected from the internet, that were supposed to fix this problem, so first up was UnHackMe. Another fail!

So onto adwcleaner, suggested by Wainui, and good grief things went wild. I got pages of problems, the screen just kept scrolling, but in amongst it all was mystartsearch featuring prominently.

When it had finished I looked at what it had found and most of it was gobblygook to me so I thought bugger it I’d let adwcleaner deal with the problems and see what happens. After all, I’ve got a fairly recent clone of the disk if things go really pear shaped.

Now the good news is I needn’t have worried because mystartsearch has gone and the computer seems fine so far.

But it doesn’t end there.

On Webpages words were still highlighted, underlined, and attached to hyperlinks.

As an example the word “THIS” in your post Lawrence I thought might be a genuine link but it took me here. www.casinobonus4u.com Not blaming you at all Lawrence, just showing how the sods tried to get some mileage out of your post as well.

Anyway, at this stage I thought I’d run eset nod32 again to see if it could find anything now, but 10hrs later we come up empty again.

So that’s where I’m up to as the sun rises.

I’m going to take a real close look at my add-on’s in firefox after breakfast because apparently that is where some of this stuff gets hidden.

I’ll update later. :)

installing the spare tire takes a lot less time than buying a new car.

new windows takes less than an hour, nod32 took ten hours?

1400142 2015-05-06 21:25:00 new windows takes less than an hour, nod32 took ten hours? Installing Windows, sure doesn't take long, but then you have all the updates and drivers ( sometimes have to download lots of them). Having to install all your programs back, replacing data, some programs a person has may not be able to reinstall, Eg: if they lose the keys, or installs. Setting up printers --- the list goes on.

Yesterday Had to do a fresh install of a W7, couldn't use my normal updated version with all the patches as the owners key wouldn't work as it wasn't a general OEM or Even Retail OS. It took close to 6 hours continuously just to download and install all the updates for windows. Now there's all his programs which will also require updates. Some of us actually do the job fully, not half baked like other places. ;)

Nod32 can take 10 hours, just depends if its set to do in-depth scans as well as the speed of the computer & amount of data. Been MANY times when doing scans its got to 99% within 45 minutes and you feel like stopping it, but it suddenly goes nuts finding things. Some other AV's are the same.

Picking one up today, has Norton - told the guy a few weeks back its not that good, he's now saying its full of popups, slow as a wet week & something has gone through 80% of his monthly traffic in 3 days.

1400143 2015-05-06 22:26:00 Hmmmm, might be getting somewhere?

I found this in firefox extentions and disabled it.

6457

Restarted computer and problem gone.

Enabled it restarted computer Problem back.

Did this three times with same results so removed it.

Now I’ll wait to see if it reinstalls itself from somewhere. :groan:

Where the hell it came from in the first place eludes me.

1400144 2015-05-06 22:39:00 All you need to do is reset IE, Firefox & Chrome to defaults. That will disable all addons & extentions & search engines
Make sure the default search engine is google in all 3.
The go to control panel, & uninstall things like search engines, ask toolbar & any other toolbars

IE : reset it via control panel, internet, reset
FF : help, trouibleshooting, reset
Chrome: reset is in the options menu somewhere
