What absolute nonsense Wal, a Win Win situation, I don’t think so.

We lose big time to the tune of about $100k a year when we could have just told the Brazilians authorities that he was a Murderer and Paedophile and they could do what they liked with him.

If they chose to deport him, as some countries do, (like Australia) then I guess we’re stuck with him, but to actively seek him, and boast about it to boot, defies logic. :groan:

Wal, were you once a member of the police force?

Not guilty.

The law in most countries is an ass, but it's still the law. Brazil does not have an extradition treaty with NZ, and it still has to act within its own laws and prescribed procedures. Presumably those do not allow it to harbour a criminal on the run. Don't forget Smith didn't commit his crimes against Brazilian citizens or Brazilian law. It's not Brazil's fault some NZ scum arrived in their country and their only option - legally - is to deport him. Deportation proceedings take time and must be followed - at a cost to Brazil.

The win-win situation negated additional and pointless expense to both countries and achieved the desired result. Like it or not, Smith being a NZ Citizen, we're reponsible for him. Brazil is not.

Well they don’t have an “Extradition Treaty” with us as you say, so leave it up to them.

By all means send them his file, as a matter of good faith, and see what happens.

It doesn’t appear that he now has any money, so let’s see how smart he really is.

Bit late now, but that was my thinking.

All this poncing around by the Police makes me sick.

Outlawry was a principally pre-Magna Carta phenomenon.

But wasn't abolished until 1938.

"In the context of criminal law, outlawry faded not so much by legal changes as by the greater population density of the country, which made it harder for wanted fugitives to evade capture; and by the international adoption of extradition pacts.[citation needed] It was obsolete by the time it was abolished in 1938.[8][9][10]"

Great pity, because as decibel pointed out it would have suited our need perfectly.

1389166 2014-12-04 10:24:00 While on the subject of pathetic justice in New Zealand, this evenings news, 2 men given 5 years for pouring petrol over a 55 year old man and setting fire to him. he died.
Prosecution said that they had no evidence that the accused intended to kill the man. I suppose they did it for his health!? What difference does it make what they intended to do, they acted deliberately and the man is dead! Personally I would shoot them and save the Tax payer a lot of money.
