1389101 2014-11-28 04:05:00 speed may not the issue but its not that simple.

tickets for speed offenses is easy to do. processes are all in place as are all the legals. very few go to court. other driving offenses generally go through the courts which bogs up the system. its very easy and CHEAP to police speed.

the other thing is keeping a tight lid on speed helps stop drivers go into "race mode".
see a lot of that here because people go from cruising easy going motorway (driving perfectly fine) then get into single lane twisty roads where they have to work the car and have traffic to contend with. they go from cruise mode to attack mode. they tailgate everything, pass anything in front (even if it means going slower after passing), passing lanes become drag racing lanes, cut corners etc.
if they can't speed to overtake, they know they can't overtake, they tend to mellow out and sit back and cruise.
holiday traffic here is reasonable safe. there is so much traffic no one bothers overtaking, theres no rush to go anywhere because theres a queue of 100 cars in front and they know they can't go anywhere.

its very simple, the slower the traffic goes the less crashes there is.

1389102 2014-11-28 04:52:00 It's another revenue gathering exercize along with the new alcohol limits that kick in the same day. I'm sure that people respect for the police will take a big hit with both of these revenue gathering tactics. paulw (1826)
1389103 2014-11-28 04:59:00 Its about time the speeding culture on NZs roads is stamped out. Speedos under read if you are not sure check it against a GPS, sick to death about clowns whinging its a revenue exercise its not. Its an exercise in safety I am getting ******* annoyed with speeders passing me on other lanes on the NW motorway which has a 80 kph limit. The reason is they are rebuilding the motorway and thats the safe speed to protect the workers. If I was El Presidento of NZ I would getting the police to pull speeders out of their cars and pistol whip them. prefect (6291)
1389104 2014-11-28 05:04:00 Extra revenue Shon-Key will use, to install soon to be legal spy cameras in everyone's houses.

You just can't help it can you. Bit like having Tourettes Syndrome I think. ;)

Spoken like a true police state fascist.. I see in the news tonite that the police have back tracked on this after the public backlash..

1389106 2014-11-28 06:08:00 The lower speed limit is partly an excuse to gain more revenue. Saying it All about safety is rubbish and contradictory.

AND just to show how confused the law makers Eg the government really are, they came out the other day that an increase to 110 on some roads in NZ is in the pipeline
The Government is warming to the idea of a 110kmh speed limit on the best roads - and has confirmed it is under serious consideration for several new motorways------if the road design can safely allow for different speeds, then we should at least think about it," -- So on one hand they say slow down, the other speed up ----- wish they would make their ****in minds up 110kmh-limit-moves-closer (www.stuff.co.nz)

1389107 2014-11-28 06:10:00 110 actually makes sense on long straight sections of motorway (like Ramarama) IMO. But I do agree that no tolerance is ridiculous. pcuser42 (130)

I'm glad to read this. I'm all for clamping down on dangerous drivers - be it drivers who are texting, speeding, driving incredibly under the speed limit, drunk, high, incompetent or whatever else kind of stupid, but I think ticketing people for going 1km over the limit is just BS. Ticketing anything under 5kms over the limit is ridiculous.

My previous car had a speedo that graduated in tens, but my latest car has a speedo that is graduated in 20s, and judging where the needle sits at 50kms is actually really tricky. I could be doing anywhere between 45kms and 55kms with the aim of doing 50. 100kms is easier because there is an actual number for that, and I often go into cruise control on the motorway anyeway. I'd rather keep my eyes on the road and not hit anything or anyone than be constantly looking at my speedo stressing that I might be doing 52kms.
